The Big Kookaburra in Rotary Park

Kurri Kurri is in the Hunter region of New South Wales, and can be considered the mural capital of Australia due to the sheer amount of murals.

By car

When going on the Hunter Expressway (M15), exit onto Main Road and turn left, then continue for about a kilometre or two and you'd be there.

By train and bus

Take the Hunter Line to 1 Maitland Station Maitland railway station on Wikipedia, then take the 161 bus line to Kurri Kurri.

  • Murals. There are 55 murals around the time illustrating events from the regions history
  • 1 Big Kookaburra. Sitting smack-bang in the centre of the town, it's hard to overlook this 4.5-metre (15 ft) statue on 219 Lang St (between Lang and Barton Streets), in the Garden of Honour. Like most rural Australian towns, this is Kurri Kurri's "big thing".
  • 2 Richmond Vale Railway Museum, 262 Leggetts Dr, +61 2 4018 7230. A family-friendly heritage railway and museum, claiming to be the only heritage railway north of the Hawkesbury River (in New South Wales). Adults: $16; concession: $11; children 5–17: $7.50; children <5: free.
