Lagos to Ibadan Train trip is a 157-kilometre rail trip from Ebute Metta in Lagos to Moniya in Ibadan. The trip is a section of the proposed Lagos to Kano Standard Gauge Rail Project.

Understand[edit]

The construction of the rail line started in 2017 and was completed in 2020. The rail is being managed by the Nigerian Railway Corporation, a Nigerian federal government agency. They will be in charge of informing you on the departure, take off and arrival at the destinations at the stations you intend you alight. The train was commisioned and it began its full operation in June 2021.

Prepare[edit]

The train leaves the train station at the exact departure time. Please plan to get to the station as early as you can. The traffic in Lagos can be unannounced at times. So plan to get to the station an hour early in order not the miss your trip.

Getting on[edit]

Tickets[edit]

As at October 2021, tickets can only be purchased at the train stations. Online ticket purchase is not available. You have to go along to the train station with an identity card as no ticket will be sold to you without a means of identification. Ticket prices are as follows:

  • Economy Class- ₦ 2,600.00
  • Business Class 54 Seater- ₦ 4,000.00
  • First Class 24 Seater - ₦ 6,000.00

Schedule[edit]

As of October 2021, there are two trains a day in each direction. Each trip takes 2 hr 50 min. See the Nigerian Railway Corporation website for departure times.

Route[edit]

Mobolaji Johnson Train Station, Alogomeji, Ebute Metta, Lagos
Obafemi Awolowo Train Station, Moniya, Ibadan

The trip starts at the Mobolaji Johnson Train Station at Alagomeji, Ebute Metta, Lagos, and it moves to the Babatunde Raji Fashola Train Station at Agege, Lagos.

The journey continues to the Wole Soyinka Train Station at Abeokuta, the train proceeds to the Samuel Ladoke Akintola Train Station at Omi Adio, Ibadan.

The train stops at the Obafemi Awolowo Train Station at Moniya, Ibadan.

There are train stations under construction at Olodo, Kajola and Papalanto.

On board[edit]

While you are on board, there will be intermittent announcement, from the take off point and the time the train will take off. There will also be announcement when the train is approaching the train stations along the train route. The duration the train will be stopping for will also be announced. There will be frequent announcement against the consumption of alcohol and and other harmful substances such as cigarettes while on board, it is advisable you don't go on the trip possessing such substance. There are also electrical sockets and USB ports attached to each seat section on the train. You are allowed to power your devices while on board. There is a screen displaying a subtitled movie and there will be music playing from the announcement speaker in a low volume.
