By plane to the airport at El Vigia (VIG IATA), or direct to Merida city. The latter involves some impressive landing, the airport being tucked into the valley between steep mountains.

Like the rest of Venezuela, Mérida is largely unsafe. Violent crime is pervasive, and criminals and gangs specifically target tourists, many of whom robbed, kidnapped, sexually assaulted, and murdered.
