Maarat al-Numan (Arabic: مَعَرَّةُ النُّعْمَانِ) is a town of about 100,000 inhabitants in Northwestern Syria.

[edit]Driving or taxi is the best option. The city is located along highway M5 between Aleppo and Damascus, expect frequent military checkpoints.

[edit]- 1 Great Mosque of Maarat al-Numan (جَامِع مَعَرَّة ٱلنُّعْمَان ٱلْكَبِير). A 12th-century Ayyubid-era mosque.
- 2 Maarat al-Numan museum. Hosting an impressive number of mosaics from the Dead Cities before the war, the museum was badly damaged during the Civil War. As of 2024 the museum showcases a limited collection and is open sporadically.
- 3 Maarat al-Numan castle. Ruins of a medieval castle.
- 4 Mausoleum of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz (In neighboring village of Deir Sharqi, 5 km southeast of central Maarat al-Numan). Resting place of Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, eight caliph of the Umayyad Caliphate who ruled between 717 and 720 AD.
