Mount Cameroon (also known as Fako) is an active volcano and at an elevation of 4,040 metres (13,250 ft) is the highest peak in Cameroon. It is a popular climb that does not require any special equipment.

Understand[edit]

Above the tree line

Mount Cameroon is the most active volcano in West Africa, having last spewed lava in 2012. The trail rises through farmland, then forest, and then a barren volcanic landscape once you break the tree line. Mount Cameroon is the 31st-most-prominent peak in the world, and the views from the top are spectacular.

Prepare[edit]

The best time to climb Mount Cameroon is from December to early March, during the dry season. Cameroon may be tropical, but it is chilly at the top of the mountain. Be sure to bring a warm jacket as well as rainproof gear.

Climbing to the peak takes between 1–4 days, depending on your fitness level and the price you want to pay for a guide. One-day climbs are only for the extremely fit. The most popular climb is two days, although this is still strenuous. For a two-day climb, you can expect to pay US$450 for a guide if you work through a broker. However, there is a cheaper option: simply make it the town of Buea where you should be able to negotiate a guide for about half that price.

Get in[edit]

The closest international airport in in Douala. From there it is a 70 km (43 mi) drive along sealed roads to Buea.

Climb[edit]

Hut #2

The most popular route is the "Guinness Trail", which begins near Buea. It is a 12.7 km (7.9 mi) hike to the top. There are several huts along the route. For a two-day climb, you will sleep in hut #2 at an altitude of 2,900 m (9,500 ft).

Stay safe[edit]

While it isn't a technical climb, it can be tricky. Some footholds are quite tenuous and the terrain jagged and often slippery. Be sure to bring quality footwear!
