Putao is the northernmost city of Kachin State in Northern Myanmar.

The Rewang people predominate Putao. It has the highest peak and the only snowfall in Southeast Asia.

Putao can be reached only by air. A hydro power project was constructed near Duk Dang Village by the KIO after a ceasefire agreement with the state peace and development council.

Get in[edit]

Putao is in a restricted area and it is usually only possible to visit by air and with a permit from MTT. Because of the ongoing Myanmar army action against the Kachin Independence Army, no permits were being issued to foreign nationals for travel to Putao (Nov 2012).

By plane[edit]

A handful of airlines fly to and from Myitkyina. It is possible to join an organised tour to Putao (the travel agency arranges the permits) and it is uncertain whether permits are issued to independent travellers.

Get around[edit]

  • 1 Kaung Hmu Lon Ancient Historical Pagoda. Quite a pagoda and quite a footbridge across the river at the base of the Himalayan foothills. You may be able to take a boat across the river too.

  • 1 Putao Trekking House, No.424/425, Htwe San Lane, Kaung Khataung, +951656905. Sort of a getaway stay in this town at the base of the Himalayans with restaurant/bar and WiFi. It is kind of spendy. 96,500 kyat.
