Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu is a municipality with a riverside, rural landscape and a great historical heritage, of the regional county municipality (MRC) of La Vallée-du-Richelieu, in Montérégie, in Quebec, Canada.

Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu is a recreational tourist destination facing Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu, on the opposite bank.

History[edit]

The parish of Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue was canonically erected in 1750 on land belonging to the seigniory of Contrecoeur. In 1921, Saint-Antoine was split into two separate municipalities: the village of Saint-Antoine-de-Padoue and the parish of Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu. In 1982, the two municipalities were reunified under the name of Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu.

Sir Georges-Étienne Cartier, one of the fathers of the Canadian Confederation of 1867, was born in Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu.

By car[edit]

  • From Montréal (61 km). Take the Jacques-Cartier bridge (east); take route 132 (eastbound) to Varennes; take Chemin du Pays-Brûlé (eastbound); take Highway 30 (northbound); take the Montée de la Pomme-d'Or (direction East) to the village of Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu.
  • From Quebec (241 km). Take Highway 20 (westbound) to the Beloeil exit; take Route 223 (northbound), to the village of Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu.

The Richelieu River crossing service allows you to avoid a long detour to go south to the Autoroute 20 bridge or north to the Autoroute 30 bridge in Sorel.

  • 1 Handfield Ferry on the Richelieu River (Débarcadère situé au bout de la rue Principale de Saint-Roch-de-Richelieu), +1 450 787-2759. April to December: 07:00-00:00. This ferry is a cable ferry used to shuttle between the villages of Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu and Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu, over a distance of 389 m between the two quays. The ferry is accessible from the west side of the river, at the junction of rue du Rivage (route 223) and rue Montée de la Pomme-d'Or. Every winter, an ice bridge is built there for automobile traffic. $4.50 per car; $3.50 per motorcycle and $2.50 by bicycle or on foot.

More than 50 artists from Quebec and abroad will thrill festival-goers. Masterclasses, a music camp for kids and cultural presentations related to traditional music round out the concert series.   • Heritage tour of 42 historic sites (Circuit patrimonial de 42 sites historiques). Heritage circuit to discover monuments, heritage houses, historical information panels, wayside crosses, rustic buildings and other vestiges of Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu's past. The hard copy of the circuit can be obtained by entering the Maison de la culture Eulalie-Durocher.   • 2 Deux circuits à vélo, 1028, rue du Rivage. The suggested starting point for a bike tour is Maison Eulalie-Durocher. In summary, the suggested regular cycling circuit is: Chemin Monseigneur Gravel (towards the north), Rang de l'Acadie (towards the west), Montée Lapierre (towards the north), Rang du Brûlé (towards east) by entering Saint-Roch-de-Richelieu, then return to the starting point by chemin du Rivage (route 223) along the west bank of the Richelieu River. The suggested circuit is available on the Internet. Cycling enthusiasts can opt for a second, more extensive circuit, 45 km (estimated time: 2 hr 30 min), which requires taking two ferries (that of Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu and that of Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu ); it allows you to cross Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu, Calixa-Lavallée, Saint-Roch-de-Richelieu, Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu and Verchères. Each route passes through various points of historical interest.

  • 6 Quai Ferdinand-Fecteau, +1 450-. This municipal wharf is a bucolic site along the Richelieu River and in the heart of the village. Ideal site benefiting from the shade of mature trees, picnic tables and the docking of pleasure craft. Boaters can come and stock up at the various shops in the village or come and sleep there. This wharf also offers a boat launch.
  • Municipal parks, +1 450-584-2173. The main municipal parks are:
    • Miyuki Tanobe Park, created in 2017, featuring iconic trees on Rue du Rivage. This toponym evokes Miyuki Tanobe, a native of Japan who came to live in Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu in 1971. This park is endowed with works reproduced on panels;
    • Parc de la Fabrique - This park evokes several milestones in local history. It has a monument in homage to George-Étienne Cartier (erected in 1919), a commemorative plaque evoking the arrival of four Archambault brothers, who are considered to be the founders of Saint-Antoine, le Mai des Patriotes, installed in memory of the Antonians who participated in the battle of Saint-Denis (and particularly those who died such as Honoré Bouteillet, Benjamin Durocher, Lévis Bourgeois and André Mandeville), the millstones of the banal mill demolished more than a hundred years ago and found around 1950 by Ovila Cordeau plowing her field;
    • Georges-Étienne-Cartier Park - Visitors will discover a monument explaining the ruins of the house of Georges-Étienne Cartier, with its old well;
    • Parc Dompierre sur mer - This green space surrounds the Maison de la culture Eulalie-Durocher. This toponym evokes Dompierre sur mer, in France, which is culturally twinned with Saint-Antoine-sur-Mer. A traditional bread oven has been built there;
    • Parc Chamtoise - This park has recreational facilities: play modules for children, TrekFit training bars, beach volleyball court, pétanque court, Box-o-sports, etc.;
    • Around the community center - A variety of outdoor recreational facilities are available to the public: skateboard park (skatepark), 11-a-side soccer field or two 7-a-side soccer fields, basketball court and outdoor skating rink (on the soccer field, in winter);
    • Parc Deslauriers - Located on Montée de la Pomme-d'Or, this park is under development.

  • 1 Saint-Ours City on the east bank of the Richelieu River having celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2016. The offer of recreational and tourist activities is diversified, in particular: three campgrounds, the Parc Canada oTentik, the Club de Golf les Patriotes, municipal sports and recreation, and the intense pleasure boating on the Richelieu River. Saint-Ours is a centre of the arts.
  • 2 Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu has a great story to tell visitors, especially in terms of: agriculture, river navigation, shops, public events (in particular: Fête du Vieux Marché, commemoration of the Patriot Battles of 1837), etc. This locality offers distinctive getaways and stays for visitors by involving them in leisure and community life: events, restaurants, agrotourism, accommodation and picnic areas, museum, heritage circuit, summer getaways, arts and culture.
  • 3 Saint-Charles-sur-Richelieu Vacationing is highly developed along the waterfront road (route 223 - rue Richelieu) due to pleasure boating. The Hôtel des Trois Tilleuls and the Vieux Quai Fédéral (facing Île Jeannotte) attract many tourists. Boating traffic on the Richelieu River generates a variety of water activities: canoeing, water skiing, fishing, marinas... The municipality offers several recreational tourism activities with its parks and leisure facilities.
  • 4 Saint-Marc-sur-Richelieu Vacationing is highly developed along the waterfront road (route 223 - rue Richelieu) because of pleasure boating. The Trois Tilleuls hotel and the Old Federal Quay (facing Jeannotte Island) attract many tourists. Nautical traffic on the Richelieu River generates nautical activities: boating, water skiing, fishing, marinas...   • 5 Calixa-Lavallée This is a historic rural municipality in the middle of the land between the St. Lawrence River and the Richelieu River. Its main attractions are its annual agricultural fair, its equestrian centres, its art forge, its rural landscapes, its environment conducive to cycling, its local products and its picturesque architectural heritage.
  • 6 Contrecoeur Contrecoeur is renowned as a site to admire the shows offered by the river and the magnificent sunsets. Visitors can admire the countryside and river landscapes, while participating in recreational tourism activities in the great outdoors, including hunting, fishing, boating, relaxation, vacationing, as well as the observation of flora and fauna. Contrecoeur has a great history to discover.
  • 7 Saint-Roch-de-Richelieu Municipality renowned for its ferry (which is replaced in winter by an ice road) linking Saint-Ours, its Deschaillons island, its picturesque built heritage and its offer of recreational and tourist activities (e.g., boating yachting, agritourism, campgrounds, etc.).
