Salò[dead link] is a town in Lombardy, northern Italy on the bank of Lake Garda.

[edit]The town has the longest promenade on the banks of Lake Garda. It was the seat of government of the Italian Social Republic — a puppet state of Nazi Germany — from 1943 to 1945. The ISR is often called the "Republic of Salò" (Repubblica di Salò in Italian).

[edit]The town is located on two of the most important roads in the nearby zone, the SS45bis and the SS572, the last being an important transport route to Desenzano, from which the A4 highway can be taken.

- 2 Parrocchia di Salò Duomo Santa Maria Annunziata (Duomo), Vicolo Campanile, 2.
- 3 Palazzo del Podestà (Palazzo del Capitano Rettore della Magnifica Patria), Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. It houses Minicipio (Town Hall).
- 4 Palazzo Fantoni, Via Fantoni, 49. A 15th-century palace. It hosts an archive Ateneo di Salò.
- 5 Palazzo Terzi-Martinengo, Via Trento 4-8 (loc. Barbarano). A fortress-like palazzo, a part of which was built in 1560, in the hamlet of Barbarano. It is classified as a building of national interest.
- 6 Lazzaretto di San Rocco, Via Tavine. The major purpose of this complex was to prevent and cope with epidemics. Its construction started in 1484. Annexed to the hospital, the chapel dedicated to St. Rocco, built in 1514, and the monumental cemetery Vantini, made between 1825 and 1853.
