San Ignacio de Moxos is a town in Beni Department.

Understand

[edit]
The church in San Ignacio de Moxos

San Ignacio is known for its native costumes and Jesuit mission.

Get in

[edit]

You can come by a shared taxi (leave when full) from Trinidad or San Borja (or Rurrenabaque). From San Borja it takes 3.5 hr and costs Bs. 70, the road is a mix of gravel and dirt.

The bus terminal is east of the town (Trinidad side), but it's not a long walk to the main plaza.

Get around

[edit]

On foot or by mototaxi.

See

[edit]

Main square and the church is nice. There is another (older, but more natural) square (or park) on the way to the bus terminal.

Do

[edit]

Participate in town events (some part of them around the church), where you can get a glimpse at traditional costumes. For more info on events, ask in the Beni department tourist office in Trinidad or ask locals.

  • 1 Laguna Isirere (Isiriri qucha). Take a dip in the refreshing waters of this lagoon near San Ignacio de Moxos.

Sleep

[edit]
  • Alojamiento (near service area, where shared taxis from San Borja stop; some 3 blocks from the center). Very basic, little cleanness, a bit broken. May be cold and noisy to sleep. Bs. 50 a night for a bed in triple room.

Several accommodation options exist in this area, just ask around, starting from Bs. 35.

Go next

[edit]
  • Trinidad A pleasant town, which has a couple of attractions itself, and can serve as a gateway to more places in Beni. More - you can take a multi-day boat ride via Mamore river starting from near Trinidad and up to Guayaramerín at the border with Brazil.
  • Rurrenabaque A laid-back town offering superb jungle (e.g. Serere reserve, Madidi National Park) and pampas tours.
