Get in[edit]

By train[edit]

  • JR Hidaka main line

By bus[edit]

By car[edit]

Shizunai is about 2.5 hours from Sapporo by car.

Get around[edit]

  • 1 Nijikken-dōro (二十間道路). 24hours. Best time to see at Early May. This 120-foot-wide avenue, lined with Ezo mountain cherry trees listed as one of Japan's top 100 cherry blossom spots, is the major attraction here. Free.
  • Ainu Museum (新ひだか町アイヌ民俗資料館), 7-1 Shizunaimauta, Shinhidaka (新ひだか町静内真歌7-1) (In Mauta Park), +81146433094. Tu-Su 9AM-5PM. A small museum of Japan's aboriginal people. Free.

If you go to mountains, in spring and summer, you can see cherry blossoms. Due to the latitude and climate, the trees blossom later than in the rest of Japan. This can be beneficial if you have arrived in Japan after the main cherry blossom season. Fishing, camping, and hiking are popular. In winter, you can see many swans in the Shibechari River.

  • Nakai Suisan (中井水産). Fresh marine products and tasty hors d'oeuvres.
  • Ota Apiary (太田養蜂場), Miyukicho 6-3-26. Sells locally produced honey.
