The Arriere Pays, that is to say the largely undiscovered 'Back Country', which you get to either through the spectacular Gorge du Loup, or over Col de Vence, or via the stunning perched village of Gourdon or by going up the Route Napolean is far less explored. Even in the height of summer it is still very quiet. However it is a very good base for those who enjoy out door holidays. The website www.pottyplace.com is one of the most informative websites about this area and gives lots of sport related information, useful links and general information about the area, market days, restaurants, villages to visit etc. The area is famous for paragliding and hangliding due to the warm air currents. With lots of natural gorges the area is famous for canyoning and climbing, see the above website for more information. Gorges like Clue d'Aiglun, Clue de Riolan and Clue de St Auban are well worth visiting. Due to the lack of tourist traffic and excellent road surfaces the area is very good for cycling, see cycling itineraries on the above website. The area has lots of forests and again the forestry tracks give lots of scope for mountain biking. Old paths still link the remote villages, they are well sign posted and free of litter, see the suggested walks on the above website. St Vallier de Thiey has 3 show caves which are all worth a visit. The roads in the Arriere Pays Grassois are not for the faint hearted, the film Golden Eye was filmed on the road above Greolieres and the Monte Carlo Rallye goes over Col de Bleyne and down through Le Mas to Aiglun every January.
