The Getty Thesaurus give Pusan as the preferred form of the name. [1]. --(WT-en) Evan 11:19, 20 Aug 2005 (EDT)

Project:Romanization (which was, admittedly, written by me =)) says Revised Romanization wins. I think {B,P}usan is sufficiently obscure for the average reader that there's no compelling reason to stick with the old romanization, a Google test for English results gets 629k for Pusan and 534k for Busan. All official literature, signage etc in Korea has been using the B-form exclusively since 2000. (WT-en) Jpatokal 11:28, 20 Aug 2005 (EDT)

I went to Busan last year, and locals (and most Koreans) say "Pusan" to me!!

That's presumably because, like most of us, you can't tell apart an aspirated and unaspirated plosive. (WT-en) Jpatokal 08:07, 8 July 2007 (EDT)

Correct, but the for initial consonants, the old romanisation system was much, much closer for the unitiated (which is most people, let's be fair) as the level of aspiration varies according to consonant placement within the word and associated euphony. The government-mandated romanisation revision was made with consistency, and a one-to-one relationship, not literacy or phonetics in mind. By all means spell using the official standard, this makes nothing but perfect sense to me, but mentioning "Pusan" or "Taegu" or "Taejeon" etc. as an additional pronounciation guide may be appropriate I feel. I mean, people need to know how to pronounce a city name to buy domestic train tickets for a start. This is a serious discussion that really, really needs to be raised for the whole South Korean wikivoyage project in general. Who heads it anyway? (WT-en) Snave 07:10, 29 November 2010 (EST)

I changed "Busan, also Pusan" to "Busan, formerly Pusan." When I was in Busan, everything from formal places of interest, such as tourist booths organized by the city gov't, was stated it as such and not Pusan. (WT-en) Zepppep 18:09, 8 January 2010 (EST)

Knowing that the spelling used to be Pusan is important background for travelers, but ultimately the official name is Busan. Admittedly events such as the 'Pusan Film Festival' will ensure the old spelling endures but it is no different to Peking now being Beijing or Bombay now being Mumbai. --(WT-en) Andrewssi 00:42, 3 April 2012 (EDT)

Anyone have thoughts on the first picture? There are much better shots of the city than the port. I have some pictures of the city from Haeundae, from the Gwangan Bridge and some other good ones. Any objections? 220.77.95.44 21:30, 13 November 2009 (EST) Agreed mate, that initial picture, as nice as it is, is a bit of a turnoff. A snapshot of the bridge or the street full of cinema-related statues would be much more representative of what the avergae tourist will see in my personal opinion. (WT-en) Snave 07:10, 29 November 2010 (EST) I went ahead and changed the picture to a scenic one I took from MoonTan road. The port picture was a turn-off, and no discussion has happened on this since November 2010. If anyone has a better picture then that would be great. --(WT-en) Andrewssi 03:05, 7 May 2012 (EDT) I have updated the Busan page quite a bit since the WikiTravel migration. It would be good to have some new discussion around Busan going here.
