Talk:False Bay
Add topicGreetings. I'm Dave Mullany, a South African photojournalist. My e-mail address is davemullany@worldonline.co.za. I don't want to be a party pooper or anything, but I think you'll find your information regarding False Bay and the Atlantic Ocean is incorrect. Contrary to popular misconception, the Atlantic and Indian Oceans do not meet at Cape Point, but much further south-east - at Africa's southernmost point - Cape Agulhas. All of which means: False Bay isn't on the Atlantic - it's part of the Indian Ocean. Have a lovely day :-)
- Actually, False Bay is on the Atlantic, not Indian Ocean, specifically for the reasons you pointed out above; it is located west of Cape Agulhas. The entry under False_Bay#Do is however very confusing and will copyedit that. By the way, you are welcome to edit article that you feel is incorrect. --(WT-en) NJR_ZA 12:40, 4 August 2007 (EDT)

Body of water, not a destination.
One does not go to "False Bay" as such, one goes to the destinations on its coast specified by name. Most are part of Cape Town, but some are not, making a redirect inappropriate.

RedirectKeep. As a real geographical place, it should be redirected, rather than deleted, per Project:Deletion_policy#Deleting_vs._redirecting. A casual Google/Wikipedia search didn't answer the question of to where, though. If it's inhabited, then perhaps to the appropriate region article? If it's not, then maybe even to Diving the Cape Peninsula and False Bay? --(WT-en) Peter Talk 02:27, 20 October 2009 (EDT)
- Scratch that, should have looked at it first. It's a valid region article, and is about the cities in the bay area, not the water itself. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 02:29, 20 October 2009 (EDT)
- This article should be kept and updated. False Bay is the marina destination which makes all the surrounding cities of the bay relevant. False Bay is one of the better destinations in the West Cape for water activities and viewing of marine animals. --(WT-en) Daniel Talk 02:29, 10 January2010 (EDT)
- Result: Keep. (WT-en) LtPowers 15:58, 7 March 2010 (EST)
Why "false"?
[edit]I can understand "False Creek" in Vancouver; from the ocean, it looks like a river mouth, but it is just an inlet. But why is this "false bay"? On the map, it looks like an actual bay, unless my limited knowledge of maritime matters is leading me astray. (WT-en) Pashley
- I looked it up on Wikipedia a couple of weeks ago. As I recall, it's because the northern shore of the bay resembles the Cape of Good Hope, causing early sailors to think they'd reached the tip of Africa, when they actually had some distance to go yet. (WT-en) LtPowers 11:09, 2 September 2010 (EDT)
- My recollection was incorrect; according to wikipedia:False Bay, False Bay was actually confused for Table Bay to the north. (WT-en) LtPowers 11:10, 2 September 2010 (EDT)
