Theological hairsplitting

Cheondae (Ch. Tientai) is a semi-esoteric Buddhist school with significant Vajrayana influences, and rather different from mainstream Mahayana thought, much less Seon (Chan/Zen). The Triple Truth and the emphasis on the Lotus Sutra are both specifically Tientai trademarks not shared by all Mahayana schools. The point of my original description was to explain why Guinsa looks so different from most other Korean temples, and the new one doesn't do that, so I've taken the liberty of reverting the edit. That's fine. However, those Triple Truths are not peculiar to the Cheondae sect, but are the central theme of the Heart Sutra, a Mahayana text, and so are common to all Mahayana schools, including Vajrayana and Zen. (note that many Buddhist texts actually point to the same truths, but just do so from different angle. The same theme is also found in the Diamond Sutra). However, as you say, the very elaborate Lotus Sutra is the main text of the Cheondae School. Anyway, it's not a major point, and I'm sure it won't make any difference to tourists visiting the complex. However, I just thought I should explain my reasons for making the amendments, and I apologize for not doing so before undertaking them. (WT-en) WindHorse 10:20, 10 February 2007 (EST)
