Region or destination?

[edit]

(WT-en) Shep questioned why I linked to the Isola Polvese page, which was just an outline and had less content in it than Lake Trasimeno article did about Isola Polvese. So I took a closer look at the Lake Trasimeno article. Here is my response. - (WT-en) Huttite 19:37, 28 December 2009 (EST)

I can see now that it does not follow the Manual of style as the long descriptions for each destination which need to be shortened to one line listings and it also has sleep listings for several destinations. Over time I would expect those listings to migrate to their destination articles, once they are written, as should also happen with the information about Isola Polvese in the Lake Trasimeno article.
Please note that region guides and other destination guides, such as city and park guides, perform different functions in Wikivoyage's geographical hierarchy. A region guide provides an overview of the destinations in the region, while the city and park destination guides provide the details. This is so that the region guide is not too cluttered with minute details. One implication is that region guides do not usually have a Sleep section, as Sleep listings appear only once each in the respective end destinations. Since being able to sleep there is a minimum criteria for an article, the logical consequence is that the sleep section is redundant in the region guide. - (WT-en) Huttite 05:45, 28 December 2009 (EST)

My question is should the Lake Trasimeno article follow the regional template more strictly and should there be separate articles for each destination? I think there should be. I would welcome beng convinced otherwise. - (WT-en) Huttite 19:37, 28 December 2009 (EST)

OK! I wikilinked the Cities and Other destinations and discovered that we already have about half the destination articles written. I see this discovery as further supporting this article following the region template more strictly. - (WT-en) Huttite 20:02, 28 December 2009 (EST)
It is not a Region; it is a relatively small lake with perhaps just one destination that merits its own listing. The lake is a destination in itself. As I indicated earlier the whole topic of lakes has been the subject of unresolved discussion so please stop acting arbitrarily. Wikivoyage is sadly lacking in content and it seems to me that the important thing is to get some decent content, which I have been trying to do (note that the Lake Trasimeno page was there before I started working on it!). Please stop arguing about whether it should be Vava'u or Neiafu; Lake Trasimeno or wherever and concentrate more on providing information about places. Happy New Year. Changes to Wikivoyage's organizational structure should not happen over objection (see dark arts), so I have reverted to the original version.

My inclination is to trust Shep's judgment, as he is a) the only person actually contributing content to this region, b) seems quite familiar with the region, and c) is a regular contributor well versed with our policies and relevant discussions. If at some point this article is bursting at the seams with information, maybe it will make sense to find a good way to break it apart, but I see no reason to do so now. And even then, I can't imagine an uninhabited island in the middle of the lake --(WT-en) Peter Talk 13:10, 1 January 2010 (EST)
