Argh -- the romanizations in the current phrasebook are shot to hell. Can somebody who knows what they're doing(tm) standardize them on the RTGS-style phonetics? (WT-en) Jpatokal 13:47, 22 July 2006 (EDT)
I wonder how useful the romanizations would be in practice for tourists. It's good that there is an explanation of the consonants. Can the same be done for the vowels or the tones? The biggest problem is that if these words are pronounced inaccurately, then none of the locals will be able to understand what is being sad. This would make the phrasebook superfluous.
- I'm in Laos right now and I've found that just like in Thailand, the locals understand us foreigners very well when we try stuff out of phrasebooks without tones. For being able to fluently communicate I'm sure the tones are crucial. But for the stilted tourist phrases a traveller needs these worries about superfluousness are overblown.
- It would be nice to have Lao script and standardized romanization throughout though. I'm a bit slow at picking up the script though. — Hippietrail (talk) 02:59, 8 September 2013 (UTC)
