Understand
[edit]The location of Nakhon Phanom Province was once the Si Khotrabun Kingdom, the capital of which was situated on the present Laotian soil opposite to the sacred stupa, Phrathat Phanom. The legend said King Nanthasen passed away before many disasters ruined the city. Noblemen as well as people agreed to move to the opposite side of the river. With dense bamboo forest, the new city was called Marukkha Nakhon. By the year 43 AD, under the reign of Phaya Sumitratham, the prosperous kingdom renovated the Phrathat Phanom for the first time along with a grand celebration. A disaster stormed and emptied the city in the next two reigns. Marukkha Nakhon city was reconstructed on the left bank in 1257 and later renamed Si Khotrabun. In 1737, the city was moved to the right side of the Mekong River again, a slightly north of the old city. It was named Mueang Nakhon and underwent many times of relocation. In 1790, after the city ruler passed away, the city requested to be under the reign of King Rama I of Bangkok. It was then renamed Nakhon Phanom, which literally means the city of mountains.

Amphoe That Phanom
[edit]Phrathat Phanom (พระธาตุพนม) The sacred stupa is located in the compound of Wat Phrathat Phanom Woramahawihan. The archaeological excavation indicates that the stupa was built during the 7th-9th Century. Legend says that the Venerable Mahakasapa, with 500 Arhats and rulers of other cities, joined hands in building the stupa and placed the chest bone relic of the Lord Buddha inside. Mirroring the Khmer architectural influence, the stupa has undergone many restorations. In 1942, the temple was honoured as a first-class royal temple.
The stupa is the real icon that nourishes the hearts of Nakhon Phanom’s people, as well as people from other provinces and Laotian Buddhists. It is believed that those who have visited the stupa 7 times will be considered the children of the stupa; and prosperity can be expected. Even once in a lifetime is considered auspicious.
On 11 August, 1975, at 7.38 p.m., after days of heavy rainstorm, the ancient stupa collapsed. The Royal Thai Government and people nationwide contributed to rebuild it in the former shape. The stupa was completed on 23 March, 1979. Besides the Lord Buddha’s relic, the reconstructed stupa houses thousands of pieces of precious items. Its crown is a golden umbrella weighing 110 kg. The new elegant stupa, on a square base, is 12.33 metres wide and 53.60 metres high. An annual celebration is held from the 10th day of the waxing moon to the 1st day of the waning moon of the 3rd lunar month. To get there. The stupa is 53 km. from Nakhon Phanom along Highway 212. Air-conditioned coaches and buses regularly leave the provincial bus terminal for the stupa.
Amphoe Renu Nakhon
[edit]Renu Nakhon (เรณูนคร) Renu Nakhon is home to the Phu Thai ethnic group who strongly preserves their tradition such as welcoming guests with a ‘Bai Si’ ceremony, ‘Pha Laeng’ typical dinner party, with ‘U’ local liquor and traditional ‘Phu Thai’ dance. There are lots of souvenir shops by Wat Phrathat Renu and in the market.
The ‘Phu Thai’ dance is traditional of this ethnic group. Handed down from generation to generation, the dance mirrors harmony among the Phu Thai people. The cheerful dance is quite popular for the festive celebrations in the 5th and 6th lunar months, which are held along with the local rocket festival and annual celebration of Phrathat Renu.
Formerly, the Phu Thai dance did not have a particular pattern. Mostly, men grouped up to show off to ladies. Presently, both men and women perform this rare traditional dance in couples. To get there. Renu Nakhon is 15 km. from Phrathat Phanom, 51 south of Nakhon Phanom. Motorists can use Highway 212; turn right at Km. 44 to Highway 2031. Renu Nakhon is 7 km. away.
Phrathat Renu (พระธาตุเรณู) The stupa is located in Wat That Renu, Ban Renu Nakhon. Built in 1918, the stupa is an imitation of the former Phrathat Phanom in a smaller size. Phrathat Renu, 35 metres high and 8.37 metres wide, has niches on the four sides. The stupa houses the ‘Tipitaka’ – the three divisions of the Buddhist Canon, gold and silver Buddha statues, precious items and regalia of Nakhon Phanom’s rulers and noblemen.
The ordination hall houses a golden Buddha image, Phra Saen, which was built in a fine meditation posture in the Laotian style.
To get there There is no direct bus service between Nakhon Phanom and Renu Nakhon. Tourists can take the bus to Wat Phrathat Phanom, get off at Ban Lak Sila, then charter a ‘skylab’ or take a motorcycle taxi to the temple, 7 km. away.
Amphoe Na Kae
[edit]Phrathat Si Khun (พระธาตุศรีคูณ) The stupa is a sacred place for Na Kae people. Phrathat Si Khun is similar to Phrathat Phanom, but it has different details. Dan Sao Khoi (ดานสาวคอย) The hill-top rock terrace offers a nice view of Phrathat Phanom. Its romantic ambience attracts couples in love to enjoy the view. In the past, it was a meeting point for couples before going to gather wild produce together. The rock terrace is situated on the Phu Phan Range, in the compound of Wat Phu Phan Dan Sao Khoi Wanaram, 6 km. from Amphoe Na Kae. It shares the same entrance as Ramkhamhaeng University, Nakhon Phanom Campus. Due to the bad road condition, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended.

The temple also houses sacred Buddha images; namely, Phra Phutthachaiyasit, the principal Buddha image, as well as a Buddha image carved from a neem tree, which is the largest of its kind in Thailand. The murals in the Phra Ubosot, featuring the history of the Lord Buddha, are quite beautiful.
Their Majesties the King and Queen presided over the ceremony to place the relics into the stupa in 1975. The temple is also the monastery of Phra Sunthon Thammakon (Luangpu Khamphan Khosapanyo), a famous monk of Nakhon Phanom and the Northeast region. To get there. Festival
[edit]Phrathat Phanom Fair (งานมนมัสการพระธาตุพนม) The annual celebration is scheduled to be held from the 10th day of the waxing moon to the 1st day of the waning moon of the 3rd lunar month. It is an important celebration for the people of Nakhon Phanom and nearby provinces.
Illuminated Boat Procession (Huea Fai) (งานประเพณีไหลเรือไฟนครพนม) Held from the full moon day to the 1st day of the waning moon of the 11th lunar month, the procession always illuminates the Mekong River in front of the city hall.
The dazzling procession is held to welcome the Lord Buddha back to Earth after preaching to his mother in heaven during the three-month period of Buddhist Lent. As part of the inherited tradition, the illuminated boat procession is among the numerous offerings to the Lord Buddha. The celebration has been handed down since ancient times.
In the past, the illuminated boats were 10-12 metre long rafts made of a banana trunk or bamboo. The raft was loaded with desserts, offerings, flowers, joss sticks, with candles and lamps to illuminate it before being launched onto the river. Today, the boat is built to be larger and much more extravagant. And it impressively illuminates the river during the festival.
Boat Races (Suang Huea) (การแข่งเรือ) The old tradition is held annually at the end of Buddhist Lent. It is quite successful to strengthen the harmony and relationship between the Thai and Laotian people along the Mekong River. The 3-km races take place on the Mekong River, in front of the Nakhon Phanom Embankment. The races are quite exciting as strong currents make them more difficult.
‘Saek Ten Sak’ Tradition.(ประเพณีแสกดต้นสาก) The ‘Pestle Dance” belongs to the Saek ethnic group in At Samat Village, 4 km. from Nakhon Phanom. The dance is performed annually on the 3rd day of the waxing moon of the 3rd lunar month to please the spirit. If the dance is to be performed in another period, the spiritual leader will have to ask for permission by offering a pig’s head, 20-baht cash, and liquor, then pick up a predictive coloured stick. If the leader picks up a stick of the same colour, that means the spirit does not allow.
The dancers will perform to the fast rhythm of drums and striking pestles painted in red and white.
‘So Thang Bang’ Tradition (ประเพณีโส้ทั้งบั้ง) The ‘So’ ethnic group, both men and women, perform this traditional dance in the funeral to send the soul of the deceased to heaven. The ‘So’, who speak their own language which sounds like Mon and Khmer, settled down in Amphoe Tha Uthen, Amphoe Na Kae, and Amphoe Si Songkhram.
Phu Thai Dance (การฟ้อนผู้ไทย) The dance of the ‘Phu Thai’ ethnic group is performed in festivals during the 5th and 6th lunar months. Although the dancers do not perform synchronically, the dance entertains the audience with beautiful postures from the dancing couples, male and female. Besides the rare dance, the ‘Phu Thai’ welcome tourists with their typical ‘Bai Si Su Khwan’ welcoming ceremony, ‘Pha Laeng’ traditional dinner, and ‘U’ local fermented liquor from the jar. Available at Ban Phu Thai, Amphoe Renu Nakhon, the dance and dinner can be arranged for prior booking. For more information, contact Mr. Chaibodin Saliphan at Tel. 0 4257 9174, 0 1263 2458.
