Article Naming Conventions[edit]

I know this part of New Zealand as Nelson, so I have an issue with this article being called by the clumsy name of Nelson Tasman. Nelson Tasman appears to be a recent construct of local government (dis)organisation in the area. I note that this region is variously called both Nelson and Tasman, often interchangably, by different agencies. [1], [2], [3], [4].

Wikivoyage convention is to use the simplest or commonly used English names, it is not always appropriate to strictly use the official names.

Historically, the original Nelson Province included the top of the South Island, covering what is now Marlborough, as well as Nelson and Tasman and extending into the Buller region of the West Coast. Areas known as North-West Nelson and Nelson Lakes are in Tasman an Marlborough District Council areas respectively. Consequently, I think that Nelson or Nelson (region) would seem to fit better here. The name Nelson Bays, which the rugby team was once known by, is another alternative.

I notice there is also some commentary on Talk:Nelson (New Zealand) that also suggests there needs to be separate regional and city articles about Nelson. - (WT-en) Huttite 07:12, 31 October 2009 (EDT)

I agree and changed the name to Nelson Bays when I did the map for the South Island (chose that name because I remember the rugby team and I prefer to not to use the "cityname (region)", it's also a very apt description of the area). - (WT-en) Shaund 00:32, 22 November 2011 (EST)
