MOSTLY MOOSE - Cycling Tour

Moose. And trees. Not much else including' traffic, 'cept scen'ry. We saw four moose without hardly looking when scouting this loop. Fairly level when riding north and south. Bumps and hills east and west. Energetic beginners, make a two-day trip out of this one. Others can do it in a day, given enough time and daylight. Paved roads run the gamut from sometimes rough to delightfully smooth.

Directions: This 67 mile, paved loop for the energetic beginner to the advanced rider departs from the junctions of Vermont Routes 114 and 105 in Island Pond. From there ride north on Route 114 through Norton to Canaan. Take Route 102 South to Bloomfield, then Route 105 West back to Island Pond.

Northern Forest Canoe Trail – Paddling Tour

Paddle your way through history on the Northern Forest Canoe Trail as it wanders through the Northeast Kingdom. The entire 740-mile trail traces Native American travel routes linking the watersheds of northern New York, Vermont, Quebec, New Hampshire and Maine. The Northeast Kingdom section follows the Clyde and Nulhegan on a 60-mile trip from Lake Memphremagog to the Connecticut River. Depending on where you put in, you can enjoy a smooth day of paddling or an adventurous push through rapids. Regardless of your choice scenery is your reward: a panoramic vista, a young moose nibbling on grass, and native bird life await!

Long Pond Natural Area, The Nature Conservancy – Walking/Hiking Tour

The Conservancy manages 1,500 feet of shoreline around this 99-acre remote, undeveloped pond surrounded by a softwood and northern hardwood forest. The most important ecological feature at Long Pond is a 30-acre northern white cedar swamp at the south end. The old logging roads on the property make good walking and hiking trails.

A northern hardwood forest surrounds the pond. This woodland is composed of sugar maple, red maple, yellow birch, American beech, balsam fir, white and red spruce and white ash. The understory includes hophornbeam and striped maple. A few large old individual yellow birches still persist. The mature northern white cedar swamp at the south end of the pond on either side of Sawmill Brook is the most extensive of several wetlands in the area. The dense canopy of cedar is broken occasionally by large white spruce. Flanking the brook is an open, narrow sedge-shrub swamp with sweet gale, leather leaf, speckled alder and a variety of sedges. These are a few of the many rare plant species on the property.

Directions

From Willey’s General Store in Greensboro Village, take Garvin Hill Road for about three miles until you come to a “Y”. Bear left on Hill Road and, after about half a mile, bear right onto Hillcrest Road. Go three-quarters of a mile, then take a left onto Tamarack Ranch Road, as it’s called in the Vermont Gazetteer. There is an old converted schoolhouse on the right-hand corner and then a homestead on the left. After that, it becomes a rough woods road. To drive in, you need a high clearance vehicle. Drive in as far as you are comfortable, avoiding right-hand turns. Park on the side of the road and walk in straight until you come to the Conservancy trail sign-in box.

A Sampling of Destinations Along the Way:

Destination #1 – Brownington The Old Stone House Museum Brownington, VT 05860 The Orleans Country Historical Society operates the Old Stone House Museum, the Kingdoms collection of regional history. The complex includes five historic structures (all dating from the early 1800s) and 55 acres of surrounding farmland. The main exhibit building, The Old Stone House, is a four story granite structure build in the 1830s to serve as a dormitory for the Orleans County Grammar School.

Destination # 2 – Brownington Clan of the Hawk Brownington, VT 05860 The Clan of the Hawk is the Coos-Cowasack Band of the Abenaki Nation of Native Americans. The Tribal Grounds, a 39-acre site located along the Willoughby River, is open to the public from early May through October, with special events scheduled through the summer.

Destination #3 – Derby Canterbury House Antiques & Collectibles Derby, VT 05829 Many of the quaint Northeast Kingdom villages have at least one antique shop, if not more. Scattered throughout the Kingdom, antique stores add nostalgia and charm to any visit.

Destination #4 – Derby Line Haskell Opera House & Library Derby Line, VT 05830 Visitors can straddle two nations at the world’s only international opera house, where performances take place in Canada and audience members sit in the U.S.!

Destination #5 – Newport Memphremagog Arts Collaborative Newport, VT 05855 Take your time whilst you browse the showroom of the Memphremagog Arts Collaborative. The Collaborative showcases work from many area artisans with a focus on cultural heritage.

Destination #6 – Newport Goodrich Memorial Library Newport, VT 05822 The Victorian structure on the corner of Main Street and Field Ave. in Newport has been the village library since it was founded by Converse and Almira Goodrich at the end of the 19th century. The Vermont Room upstairs contains extensive records and artifacts from the past century.

Destination #7 – Newport Mountain Country Soap Newport, VT 05855 An example of Kingdom ingenuity, this 20-acre former dairy farm with scenic views is not the source of natural bath and body products. Soaps, hand and body lotions, herbal body and lop balms, candles, shaving soaps, gift sets and baskets…all are manufactured and packaged in the former farm house.

Destination #8 - Westfield Couture’s Maple Products Westfield, VT 05874 Maple Products galore! Syrup, candy, lollipops, sugar, dressings, cream, and more… Call ahead to visit the sugarhouse in March or April when Jacques and Pauline Couture are busy boiling. Visitors can also stop by their dairy barn to see the milking process.

Destination #9 – Westfield Hitchcock Memorial Museum & Library Westfield, VT 05874 The Hitchcock Memorial Museum and Library was built in 1899 to serve local residents. The first floor contains an extensive historic collection. A natural history museum on the first and second floors hosts a surprising taxidermy display of North American and African animals, and a recent additional if the building houses temporary exhibits on local history.

Vermont Maple Open House Weekend
