Regions

[edit]

First of all, let me say that I'm new to this site. I'm just trying to find out the best way to go about covering the Pittsburgh region (since that's where I'm from.)

I think we need some different sub-regions for the Pittsburgh Region. Right now it just uses each county as a sub-region. Here were my ideas for the regions and some cities:

  • Allegheny County - for cities, use the ones already on the Allegheny County page.
  • Washington and Greene Counties - Washington, Waynesburg, ???
  • The Laurel Highlands (Fayette, Westmoreland, and Somerset Counties) - Greensburg, Ligonier, Uniontown, Connellsville, Somerset (plenty of 'other destinations')
  • Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Indiana, and Lawrence Counties - ???

As you can see, I couldn't come up with any names, but I believe separating it like this, or some similar way would make it easier than doing it by county. For example, how (or why) would you write a whole article on Greene County? It only has 40,000 people and it is mostly farmland.

I'm not too familiar with the area north of Pittsburgh, so I don't know if those last 5 counties should be split or not. (WT-en) Rockets 14:29, 25 June 2010 (EDT)

Counties are just our default way of dividing regions, especially regions that are defined by which counties they encompass. But we certainly prefer divisions that are more useful for the traveler. Not being familiar with the area, I can't say for sure if your suggestions are ideal, but I'd say go ahead and Plunge forward! All you need to do is start the new articles, and change the "IsPartOf" or "IsIn" template on each city's page to point to the new subregion rather than to the county or to the Pittsburgh Region. I went ahead and carried out this idea. I couldn't think of a better name for the northern and southern parts of the region than "North" and "South", but I figure we can change that later. (WT-en) PerryPlanet Talk 15:53, 5 July 2010 (EDT)
I'm assuming South will include only Washington and Greene Counties so that the Laurel Highlands will include Fayette, Somerset and Westmoreland. Correct? (WT-en) Rockets 10:46, 6 July 2010 (EDT)
That's correct. (WT-en) PerryPlanet Talk 13:27, 6 July 2010 (EDT)
