Talk:Reading (England)
I moved this page, since Reading (Pennsylvania) also exists. --(WT-en) Evan 10:46, 21 Dec 2003 (PST)
I know nothing about cycling around Reading, so I've left the Get around/By bike section blank. Anybody care to fill it in?. -- (WT-en) chris_j_wood 01:11, 15 Apr 2004 (BST)
After looking at the style manual and other pages, I think I misunderstood how to represent external (ie not wikivoyage) links. I was putting the actual url at the end of paragraphs (as suggested by at least some of templates), rather than linking text in the paragraph. Ie.
A place. With some description. http://www.alink.to.something/
rather than
A place. With some description.
Other wikivoyagers seem to be doing the latter, and I find it more readable and more consistent. The difference between internal and external links is still apparant because of the way the software uses different classes and different link colours for the different links. And the latter approach is (apparantly) much better from a Google indexing point of view. So I have changed this page to use the latter approach -- (WT-en) chris_j_wood 13:37, 13 May 2004 (BST)
Is Reading A City
[edit]Hi 213.253.45.146
As you will see, I have reverted your change describing Reading as a 'large town' rather than a 'city'. My guess, from the fact that you felt the need to make this change, is that (like me) you are a Brit. Please believe me when I say that I did not do this out of any kind of political point of view. When speaking UK English I would unhesitatingly describe Reading as a large town and NOT as a city. However the bottom line of Wikivoyage's manual of style is that it uses US English and not UK English. And in that manner of usage Reading is unquestionably an incorporated self-governing place and therefore a city.
I know accepting that doesn't come easy if, like me, you have been brought up to believe that city status comes with a royal charter or an anglican cathedral, but Wikivoyage is after all catering for worldwide travellers and we need to talk their language. If you read the last para of the Understand section, you will see that I've tried to put this into context. If you want to take this further, I suggest you look at (and add to) the comments under 'Cities' in Wikivoyage_talk:Geographical_hierarchy' -- (WT-en) Chris j wood 18:48, 12 Jun 2004 (EDT)
Luton Airport
[edit]Could someone put info on the connection from Luton Airport? Thanks! (WT-en) sixzilly 04:27, 28 June 2006 (EDT)
I think the travel times to the airports seem all wrong. 40 minutes to Heathrow and 50 minutes to Luton. Is it really only 10 minutes further from Heathrow to Luton? According to AA Route Planner the driving times and distances are: Heathrow 40 mins (27 miles), Luton 65 mins (56 miles), Gatwick 72 mins (64 miles), Stansted 97 mins (84 miles). If no one objects, I suggest changing to this data. 221.216.205.131 12:18, 24 October 2006 (EDT)
I updated the road travel times based on Google Maps and personal experience--Newburyjohn (talk) 17:42, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
Sweeney Todds
[edit]I have registered and amended the entry for Sweeney Todds. In all the time my friends and colleagues have been going there (about 10 years now) the service has never been below excellent and friendly, even when they are rammed full. also, regarding the previous microwave statement, that is only done when food is ordered that is not on the read out list from the waitresses (which consists of freshly cooked pies). Drink
[edit]I made a few changes to this section:
- Removed "well-priced" from first para (Reading is not cheap compared to other similar places)
- Corn Store is in Forbury Rd not Vastern Rd
- Nag's Head pies are no longer from Sweeney Todd
- Deleted L'Ortolan - this is already in the "Eat" section and however good the wine list, you are unlikely to go there just for a drink
Get around/Cycling
[edit]I added this section, and I have reasonable experience of cycling in and around Reading - but I'm sure there is more useful info that could be added.--Newburyjohn (talk) 18:39, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
