Is 2 weeks enough to do the South Island?

[edit]

The currently (October 2009) suggested itinery proposes spending 3 days walking the Milford Track (Is that do-able and enjoyable?) and 3 days in Abel Tasman National Park, yet misses out at allowing for a boat trip on Milford Sound. The organised Milford Track walk usually takes 4 days, and you probably want to stay the night at Milford Sound and take a boat trip the next day. Also, suggesting visiting Hamner Springs at the beginning and end of the trip would mean covering the same part of the country twice. It doesn't even mentioning Nelson, Dunedin, Invercargill, South Canterbury, Central Otago, half the West Ccast and all the places in between the major tourist traps. So much is missing and a lot of time is being wasted.

If the side trips are omitted this itinery sounds like the South Island can be done in a week; it probably can, but it might be better to suggest a fuller two weeks and add the side trips if one has extra time. Some alternative destinations to pass through, with highlights, might also be helpful. - (WT-en) Huttite 08:59, 31 October 2009 (EDT)
