Now that editors can pick any of these sorts of characters from the drop down Latin extended character set, why do we still need this?

Actually, the page you want is Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Accent. No one cares if anything links to the talk page. That said, I don't think this template makes any sense; how am I to display a name like Jonquière, Québec unless there's some way to specify which way to place the accents?
