The territory of Tijucas was explored by European colonists in the mid-18th century, drawing massive waves of Portuguese immigrants from the Azores Islands who transformed the river basin into a prosperous agricultural and shipping port. The name Tijucas originates from the indigenous Tupi-Guarani word meaning "swamp" or "muddy river," referencing the rich clay sediment deposits found at the estuary.

Today, the town balances its industrial manufacturing identity with a relaxed, small-town lifestyle. In 2019, it was home to 38,000 people. The city is a major powerhouse for the production of high-grade construction ceramics and floor tiles, heavily driven by global corporate brands like Eliane and Portobello.

The city has a subtropical climate, with very hot summers and winters where temperatures can reach close to 0 °C. Frost is common in the months of June and July, especially in the higher areas of the city. The humidity is very high and rarely drops below 60%, even in the driest months.

• From Florianópolis or Balneário Camboriú, motorists travel along the dual-carriage BR-101 highway. The well-paved 50-km journey north from the capital cuts through scenic coastal hills and takes roughly 45 minutes under standard traffic conditions.

The Tijucas Bus Terminal (Terminal Rodoviário de Tijucas), located close to the main highway crossings, is thoroughly integrated into regional transit lines. Major long-distance bus operators (such as Catarinense and Pluma) run highly frequent daily schedules connecting Tijucas directly to Florianópolis, Itajaí, and Joinville.

Once a year, a large festival is held in front of the main church: the Feast of the Holy Spirit. The festival attracts people from the region. During Christmas time, a live nativity scene can even be seen in front of the church.
