Ulhasnagar (उल्हासनगर Ulhāsnagar) is a suburb near Thane, in the North Konkan region of western Maharashtra. The town is known for its significant Sindhi refugees since the partition of India in 1947, and there have been calls by the Sindhis to rename it Sindhunagar.

Understand
[edit]Ulhasnagar was established in the years after the 1947 Partition of India as a resettlement town for Sindhi Hindu refugees who fled Sindh province (now in Pakistan). It was built as a military camp, and was renamed Ulhasnagar (after the nearby Ulhas river) after independence and grew rapidly into a self-contained township centered on trade, textiles, and small-scale manufacturing.
Today the city is one of the largest Sindhi communities anywhere in the world, and remains closely associated with Sindhi language, cuisine, and refugee heritage. It's also known nationally as a low-cost manufacturing and wholesale hub, producing garments, imitation jewelry, and consumer goods sold across India. The city's numbered residential sections (Ulhasnagar No. 1 through No. 5) still reflect its origins as a planned refugee settlement.

Buy
[edit]Ulhasnagar's wholesale markets, especially in Ulhasnagar No. 4, are known across Maharashtra for cheap clothing, jeans, imitation jewelry, and general merchandise, much of it manufactured locally. Bargaining is expected.
Eat
[edit]Sindhi cuisine is the highlight here. Look for:
- Sindhi kadhi and koki (a spiced flatbread) at local eateries.
- Papad and snack stalls, since Ulhasnagar is a major commercial producer of papad sold across India.
- Street food stalls around the main market areas and near the railway station selling Chhhole Pattice, Batar Papdi, Dal Pakwan, Dal Sandwich, and Faluda.
- Sindhi sweetshops sell singar ji mithhai (sev barfi), naarela ji mithhai (coconut barfi), maao (a very rich version of milk cake), and different types of maao, and several other delicacies.
Drink
[edit]Tea stalls and juice centres are common around the market and station areas; Faluda places sell khari lassi and mithhi lassi, i.e. salted lassi and sweet lassi.
Sleep
[edit]Budget and mid-range hotels are limited within Ulhasnagar itself; most travelers base themselves in nearby Thane or Kalyan, which have a wider range of accommodation, and visit Ulhasnagar as a day trip. Some places to stay include Shikarpuri Dharamshala and Hotel Mayur.
Connect
[edit]Standard Indian mobile networks (Jio, Airtel, Vi) have good coverage. Internet cafes and cybercafes can be found near the station and market areas if needed.
