An architectural gem about 30 km south of Bari: here, in the "Murge basse" lies the village of Conversano, the village that lives at a slow and relaxed pace.Everything is enclosed in its ancient village, starting from the Norman castle which is the main reference point,the Romanesque cathedral from which you will surely be fascinated, the Benedictine monastery and the churches of San Cosme and Damiano.Certainly the easiest way to discover Conversano is to be guided by instinct and explore all the alleys getting lost here and there.

Conversano has a large historic center full of monuments, squares and churches .

The main attraction is definitely the Castle which is located in the city center.

  • RELIGIOUS BUILDINGS
  • Cathedral - The Basilica Cattedrale Minore Pontificia di Santa Maria Assunta e San Flaviano Vescovo is the main Catholic place of worship in Conversano.In Romanesque style, the building was started between the eleventh and twelfth century.It was renovated in 1358-1379 maintaining its original shape and then heavily restored first in the eighteenth century and then in 1911, following a fire.
  • Convent of St Benedict - The monastery of San Benedetto, dedicated to the saint of Norcia, is a convent complex located in Conversano, whose construction began in the sixth century.Currently the monastery of San Benedetto is no longer a monastic convent but is a place of culture owned by the Commune of Conversano.
  • Church of S.Caterina - It is a small building about 1 km outside the town.The building dates back perhaps to the twelfth century.
  • HISTORICAL BUILDINGS
  • Castle - The castle of Conversano is a trapezoidal structure. Built by the Normans around 1054, the castle of Conversano was for a long time an important manor used,as typical of the Middle Ages, for defensive purposes.
  • The Castle Marchione - The castle of Marchione, or villa Marchione, is located about six kilometers from Conversano: was, especially in the 18th century, a hunting lodge and summer residence of the Counts of Conversano, the Acquaviva of Aragon.
  • The lakes - there are several lakes in Conversano.The main lake is Lake Sassano. Lake of Castiglione. Lake of San Vito.

Surely some of the typical dishes of this land are cavatelli and beans, pasta and chickpeas, broad beans and chicory, onion calzone,"brasciole" with meat sauce.The queen is the "focaccia" that will accompany virtually any dish; delicious are the local grilled meats, the "torcinelli" and sausages.
