San Ferdinando di Puglia is a municipality of the Apulia region, in the province of Barletta-Andria-Trani

Founded by Ferdinand II Bourbon, it is located to the left of the River Ofanto, on a small hill overlooking the neighboring territories, at an altitude of 68 m above sea level and is surrounded by vineyards, olive groves, artichokes and fishmongers.

It was founded in 1847 as an agricultural colony, derived from the ancient village of San Cassano, in order to try to raise some economic and social problems that afflicted the southern part of the Tavoliere delle puglie. The idea of founding an agricultural colony in the area was conceived by the young monarch Ferdinand II of Bourbon on his official journey through the kingdom in 1831. The socio-economic project of the colony that was presented in 1839 by the intendant of Capitanata, Gaetano Lordi, provided for:

  • The settlement of 50 families from the salt pans of Barletta (the current Margherita di Savoia);
  • a fund of 10 versures granted in enfiteusi to each family;
  • a farmhouse with 2 horses, a cart, tools, seeds, plants, etc. to each emigrant family.

In addition, for common use of the colony, 100 versures would be allocated for grazing oxen, while a further 60 versures would be reserved for the planting of vineyards and fruit trees; the colony would be endowed in addition to a church, a centimol (mill) with oven and 2 wells, some masonry houses and a hundred haystacks (which later gave their image for the realization of the city coat of arms) and which caused two heavy fires that spread the nascent community. In 1848 he took the name of Saint Ferdinand, in honor of king Ferdinand III of Castile and León, patron of the monarch of the Two Sicilies Ferdinand II of Bourbon. After the toponym was added the name of Puglia in order to distinguish the town from the municipality of the same name of Calabria.

Fair of Arthichoke

Every year, between October and November, the National Fair of Mediterranean Artichoke and Fruit and Vegetables takes place. During this event both the new cultivation technologies and the typical local products are presented, in particular peaches and artichokes, renowned throughout Italy for their quality, so as to give the city the name of city of peaches and artichokes. The golden artichoke is also assigned to the best exhibitor. The patronal feast takes place in early September or the last days of August.
