User talk:(WT-en) AstrosTexans
Hello, AstrosTexans! Welcome to Wikivoyage.
To help get you started contributing, we've created a tips for new contributors page, full of helpful links about policies and guidelines and style, as well as some important information on copyleft and basic stuff like how to edit a page. If you need help, check out Project:Help, or post a message in the travellers' pub. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 11:18, 2 March 2009 (EST)
Winchester golf
[edit]Erm, just saw the message on Peters talk page right after I reverted - you are welcome to add a bit more info, but keep it briefer and more to the point than your previous attempt yeah? cheers --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 11:17, 2 March 2009 (EST)
- One listing per business please - so is your golf course located in Winchester or Front Royal? --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 11:23, 2 March 2009 (EST)
- Please stop for a bit and read our manual of style - text copied from a hotel website, is not really appropriate here - once you read it I'll be happy to unprotect the page. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 11:47, 2 March 2009 (EST)
- In particular, please read Don't tout — it's about style, not content. Stick to the facts. (WT-en) Jpatokal 12:03, 2 March 2009 (EST)
- I read it and i feel like i am doing everything within the rules. What i dont understand is why you let the Warren County Page Die. I am working on actually putting content on these pages and i am working with you on the thumbnails to improve the look etc. I am not fighting you here, i am trying to work with you to add content and improve the pages. I just feel you are being too restrictive. I thik all hotels, golf courses, etc should have broader descriptions. In the poor economic environment we are in i am trying to bring tourism dollars to front royal and warren county vs losing business to places like woodstock, warrenton, strasburg, etc. As for the Virginia page, I do feel that GOLF should be a category there as Virginia is famous for golf just as south carolina and north carolina are. I understand you dont agree with all the changes and want each business only listed once, BUT if someone searches for VA for Golf you are not allowing them to see the truly beautiful golf courses that VA has. Dont over restrict because you have a different interpretation of the recommended guidelines. I am trying to bring tourism to my city/county that i love so much - AstrosTexans
- Good, I'll unprotect in a minute - some comments though; One listing per business is a long standing policy, which you need to discuss elsewhere, we work by consensus around here, and that one is a long standing policy - what you can do is what I did to one of your golf listings - Name of place in name of city - to link to the details, instead of having the info scattered all over the place (that also means if a details change, you don't have to update information on 15 different guides). Don't upload copyrighted images like the one of the hotel, and make sure that the information don't sound like it would on the hotels website or in an ad brochure, especially the info for the hotel is a far cry off how we want things to look here. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 12:06, 2 March 2009 (EST)
- There, page unprotected --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 12:09, 2 March 2009 (EST)
- There is often some confusion with business owners and the Project:Don't tout policy. We've had massive problems with trying to avoid businesses spamming the site, and thus now use the "only one listing" policy. However, you are welcome to promote golf in Virginia by adding general information about golf to the state-level article - for example, pointing out areas where people tend to go to golf, why Virginia is a good golf destination, etc. Keep it reasonably high-level (2-3 paragraphs) and if you want to add more information simply create a Golf in Virginia article - search for "golf" on the Travel topics page for other examples of articles dedicated to golf. Additionally, if you feel like fleshing out additional information about locations in Virginia that would also be welcome, as outlined on the Project:Welcome, business owners page. -- (WT-en) Ryan • (talk) • 12:09, 2 March 2009 (EST)
- You've been asked to follow our policies enough times already; I'm tempted to blacklist your golf course if you persist. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 13:32, 2 March 2009 (EST)
Deletion of copyrighted image
[edit]As we were editing back and forth i liked what we were working towards and I will do that. No pictures i am posting are copyrighted. Every pic i posted was taken with one of my cameras. - AstroTexans
- Are you sure? Cause this image Image:785_8523.JPG looks very much like this image found on the hotels website- --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 12:15, 2 March 2009 (EST)
- yep, its my pic taken during the warren country hot air baloon festival. want to see the other versions before i cleaned up the picture and cropped etc? haha any picture on the internet of the restuarant, golf course or hotel was taken by one of my cameras. I have about 3000 total photos so far
- No need, we assume good faith around here (most of the time), one more bit of education though - In the future please upload images to Wikivoyage Shared instead. There is a link in the box to your left, and there is also a link on the Upload file page you hit before. This is so other language versions of Wikivoyage also have access to the images, and we keep all our images at the same location (I know this can be a bit confusing - so no harm done). As you've inadvertently used our deprecated upload form, we are missing some critical information on the images; most importantly which licence Creative commons /or/ public domain you want them published under. Having our licence paperwork in order is pretty vital to a site like ours. --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 12:51, 2 March 2009 (EST)
Debacle
[edit]SERTMANN, I made the changes that we agreed on buy PeterFitzgerald deleted them all including the links you created and approved for me! i just sent this to him...
I noticed you made revisions to these pages. I have been corresponding with Stefan (sertmann) and he was the one that actually made the edits to go with the picture and the link to the front royal page. please review my talk to see that he aggred that this was OK as we are trying to actually build info on to these pages to hopefully build tourism in these areas vs competing areas. sertmann and i discussed at length touting, etc. and he agreed that this small blurb with pic and link to the front royal page was acceptable.
this is what he said, yet you just deleted all my links that he states are acceptable, I created the Golf heading and typed two nice paragraphs about Golf in VA as Ryan suggested and this put the type of link that Sertmann had created for me on there and you deleted that!
- Well, I didn't approve anything, but got the touting down to a level that I personally found acceptable, If Peter doesn't agree, I'd propose you take that debate with him - as I mentioned before we operate out of consensus around here, so the way forward is to build one. I'm going to revert the golf entry into what I think was a good compromise, but you re touted afterwards - I also think the hotel picture (if only because of the hot air balloons) and the golf course is OK, the restaurant less so, if you got 3000 pictures, how about uploading some uncontroversial scenery pictures instead? --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 15:18, 2 March 2009 (EST)
- Also, You may want to have a look at Penticton or Ann Arbor to get a better understanding on what we are aiming for, --(WT-en) Stefan (sertmann) Talk 15:56, 2 March 2009 (EST)
- I am fine with the content as it currently stands. --(WT-en) Peter Talk 16:13, 2 March 2009 (EST)
