Ireland - flights

Greetings. Thanks for your contributions to the Ireland article. Yes, you are right. My edit was incorrect. I thought I was re-adding info mistakenly deleted from the 'Get in' section, but now I realize that it was actually deleted from the 'Get around' section' - so, as you state, the flights listed were not relevant. Tá brón orm. By the way, as you are a native of the Ireland, I wonder if you'd be interested to offer your opinions on these on-going debates: Talk:Ireland and Talk:Republic of Ireland#Ireland vs. Republic of Ireland. Also, I notice that you are a relatively new contributor, so if you have any questions, please feel free to ask me or any of the other regular contributors (though maybe you won't trust me with questions regarding 'Get in' and Get around' Ha Ha) Take it easy, and again apologies for the mistaken edit. Irish regions

Hello The.Q. Sorry about the delayed response, I've been on a road trip around the rural South and haven't had any internet access. I'm very glad to see your comments on Talk:Republic of Ireland#Irish hierarchy revisited, as I hadn't been able to provoke any discussion for about a month! I will take your endorsement (and the remaining resounding silence) as license to implement the new scheme. Could you leave me a message detailing which cities you think should be put on the map? I'm very familiar with only the Shannon and Southwest regions (where my family comes from). Lastly, I'm also hard at work on Chicago#Districts right now, so I will be a bit slow about adding content to new Irish regions. In the next few days I will set up a structure and move content from existing regions to the new ones, but I would be quite grateful if you were to flesh out the new region articles, if you are interested. I also just wanted to add that I was a bit skeptical about splitting the quickbar between countries, but what you have done looks good to me! But I suppose we should update the location:Ireland image at the top. Please keep up the good work on the article to make sure it doesn't simply ignore the national boundary—I would try to do it myself, but I am not that knowledgeable about the differences and am trying to finish a new guidedistrict in Chicago before heading into the mountains this weekend. --(WT-en) Peter ^Talk 12:59, 12 July 2007 (EDT)

Section headers

Hello again. I have noticed that pages you edit somehow gain numbered section headers. I'm not even sure what is causing this, but it goes against our Project:Manual of style and in any rate it looks strange to see ==2 Cities== when there are in fact 9. Ireland

Thanks for adding the latest info to the Ireland article, but we've decided to totally split off Northern Ireland onto a separate article, and the Ireland article will be for the republic only. Had a quick look at the changes you made on the Ireland article, and it looks fine. Thanks for your efforts. I've never made over to Sligo, but it must very beautiful. Sligo

I've responded to your inquiry on the pub -- after giving the Sligo article Guide status, because there's no doubt in my mind that the tremendous work you've done there justifies it. Thanks! That said, a couple of recommendations for further improvement:

• It is conventional for the "Eat" listings to be sorted by price range, rather than type of cuisine. Exceptions can be, and are, made in situations where the number of listings is so enormous that sub-divisions are needed, but Sligo doesn't qualify (yet). Suggest you re-group the restaurants by "Budget," "Mid-range" and "Splurge" for compatibility with the Manual of Style.
• Some of the items are perhaps a bit verbose. Personally, I'd rather err on the side of verbosity and including all the stuff that ought to be there, but I'm verbose myself :-), and some of the more "analytical" members of the community might prefer something more concise. Might look at it to see if there are places where the prose could be tightened.
• Of course, a map would be a Good Thing.

All of that said, you've done terrific work there, and Star status is not far away. Keep it up! BTW, you might also drop in on a conversation I'm trying to start on Project:Community policies regarding vandalism. What is Mark as Patrolled

I was looking at some diffs today, and noticed a link which read Mark as patrolled. Of course, I clicked it (well, I had to, didn't I? It was there). Now I don't know what, if anything, I've done. What does this mean? Anyone got any idea? --(WT-en) The.Q 12:02, 5 September 2007 (EDT)

Ireland maps

No worries, you haven't messed anything up, and I keep backup copies of all my svg files anyway—I'm glad you're experimenting around with the maps! I think two things might have confused you:

1) After uploading a new version, it's necessary to "purge the cache" of both the image page and the article page where it appears. You can do this by going to the page history, and then changing the word "history" in the url to "purge". So for your talk page, you would change http://en.wikivoyage.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:The.Q&action=history to http://en.wikivoyage.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:The.Q&action=purge. Sometimes you need to refresh the page after purging too—this all really shouldn't be necessary, but there's something wrong with the cache system on the site.

2) Since I created both the road map and the regions map on the same svg, it's necessary to select exactly what you want to export. To do this, click & drag around the road map, using the select tool, to select only that map; then go to File -> Export to export a png version.

Maps and OSM

Great too see you working on maps, but could I suggest that you start putting your mapping effort into OpenStreetMap instead? They already cover most of Ireland very well indeed. The Press is starting work on an Ireland guide, specially made for OSM's State of the Map 2008 conference in Limerick, and we're hoping to make it 100% OSM.
