hey there. just popping in to say thank you for all the work you've done on the sinhala phrasebook. i am learning using it, along with a few other resources, and it is very helpful and thorough for being "just" a phrasebook. it appears you have been the major editor for some time now, so i figured i'd thank you specifically. incidentally, if you would have time to talk a little bit some time about sinhala and some advice you might have for a new learner, please do feel free to drop in on my page or respond here, and perhaps we could arrange to chat some time. regardless, thank you so much for everything you've done up to now; one of the most helpful guides on the internet. hey there again. thanks for the prompt reply.
so i hear you on the difference between written & spoken--this info seems to be in all teaching resources, so i got that in my head early on. but, thankfully, i have studied many languages before--japanese, arabic, russian, turkish...and i am a native spanish speaker. so while i may be juggling too many things at once, the concept of language being annoying, weird, or circuitous is not new to me! and my goal isn't necessarily to be highly advanced, right now--i want to be more than average conversational, let's say. but i will say that in my own personal theory of pedagogy i want to approach things as comprehensively as i can from as early on as possible. NB that for me, comprehensive does not equal over-burdening w/ useless information, it means understanding limits & limitations of every aspect i am studying so that i can choose what pace i want to go at.
what i'm getting at is that i sort of messaged you because there aren't a lot of good, free resources online. i have been piecing things together through a series of youtube videos, sites like omniglot & this page to get the basics down, but i am ready for more. i have seen the FSI PDFs and wasn't a huge fan of them but i think now that i can read most of the alphabet pretty well it will bother me less.
i would love to talk with you over gchat or skype (username: parqbench) sometime about the language and maybe ask you some questions as well about it. i realise it's a lot to ask; i myself am a busy person and find it hard to dedicate time to even things i care about. but if you could spare some time, any time, let me know. otherwise, if you have any other suggestions for resources i would love to check them out! i did order Let's Learn Sinhala Vol. 1, because i know there's a threshold you hit with free stuff where eventually you have to go for more professionally-done materials, but i still think it's a bit early for me to worry about this.
as a backstory, i am marrying a sri lankan and probably going there in december--so i definitely have an incentive to learn! she doesn't speak very much sinhala but we are both going to try to learn.
