Ushiku (牛久) is a city in Ibaraki, Japan.

This city is a bedroom community of Tokyo. It is also a bedroom community of Tsukuba Science City. Ushiku has a growing population, which is rare in Japan where the birthrate is declining and the population is ageing.

  • 2 Iris garden (観光アヤメ園), +81298712111. Open 24 hours (public park).
  • 3 Ushiku Daibutsu (牛久大仏). At 120m tall, it is the tallest Buddha statue in the world. There is a viewpoint at 85 meters that looks out through the statue's chest - don't worry, this modern structure completed in 1993 has an elevator inside. There is a pond and a garden around the base of the statue. \800 to enter inside;\500 for the garden only.
