Another use would be to locate the nearest pages for a certain place. Let's say I'm staying with a friend in Pasadena and I want to know what other stuff to see is nearby. As for the numbers clogging up pages for non-GPS users' pages, maybe that could be set in Preferences? I guess that would probably require some serious tweaking to MediaWiki, though. Anonymous person: I'm not sure. Actually, it'd be an interesting attempt at cooperation. We've already had some mention of including GPS information. Personally, I don't have one of these things, and even if I did I'd probably find most places by street address than trying to walk through buildings and parking lots to get to a particular lat/long position. I don't own a GPS myself either. I trekked through the Himalaya, the Amazon forest and the Australian desert without one, but I think it could add some value here. After all it's getting more and more used in cars, etc... (WT-en) DhDh 12:17, 19 Nov 2003 (PST)

I think it would be great to have coordinates for some things. If I didn't have a map of the city it would be great to punch in the coordinate and immediately know which direction to start walking. I know when I come to a new place (especially small cities) and I want to go the nearest Subway, I just look it up in my GPS and goto -- much faster then looking up an address in a map (if I even have one). You know what would be cool? Once we can put geographical coordinates into articles, we could have an auto-generated world map that showed points for each article in the system. Evan, perhaps we should look at UMN's Mapserver Package(http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/). It's suppose to be useful to integrates maps with websites, and does some minor GIS functions. -- (WT-en) Yosemite 20:12, 29 Jan 2004 (EST)

GPS locations and waypoints

Hi all! Since this is a tech-savy kind of travelling guide, I'd like to start puting GPS locations in for some of the entries. For a city, the GPS coords are not too useful, but for places like where to eat and where to sleep it would be invaluable to have those coordinates -- just pump them into the GPS and now you don't need to ask for directions!

My thoughts on this are that instead of just having text that gives the lat/lon, we should have some kind of easy way to download this information. The nice folks over geocaching have a way of doing this, but I don't know if there's a more general and less GPS-model-specific way of doing this. in the meantime, what is the preferred formatting, syntax, and abbreviation for adding the info to a wiki page? How about something like this --> (WGS 84) N 24 deg. 33.126' W 81 deg. 47.578' <-- it may seem superfluous to include the datum, but I would hold that this is critical info that should be included. --(WT-en) FordPrefect

There's a tool for converting between all the formats used by all popular GPS receivers (GPSrs) and mapping application called gpsbabel. So writing a script to supply a user with a file in his prefered format is easy. Also note that there are more than 3 popular ways to write GPS coordinates (DD MM.MMM like geocaching, DD.DDDDD and DD MM SS.S). In this case it may also be ideal for the user to be able to set his preferences). It was a happy surprise to see that we have the coordinates in the upper right corner of some articles. I think I wrote a feature request about it last year on WT. However many articles don't have it yet. Does anyone know if it'd be possible to somehow automatically import the coordinates from WP or do we have to type in the location coordinates for each article that doesn't have them yet one by one?
