Discussion[edit]

Another use would be to locate the nearest pages for a certain place. Let's say I'm staying with a friend in Pasadena and I want to know what other stuff to see is nearby. As for the numbers clogging up pages for non-GPS users' pages, maybe that could be set in Preferences? I guess that would probably require some serious tweaking to MediaWiki, though. As discussed at this post have you thought much about GeoUrl tags? Best, MarkDilley

Yes. This page is a start on how to make it happen. --(WT-en) Evan 12:11, 17 Dec 2003 (PST)

I was wondering where I should ask a question like:

Is it outside the scope of wikivoyage to incorporate projects like this GPS POI project? :

Anonymous person: I'm not sure. Actually, it'd be an interesting attempt at cooperation. We've already had some mention of including GPS information. Personally, I don't have one of these things, and even if I did I'd probably find most places by street address than trying to walk through buildings and parking lots to get to a particular lat/long position. Anyone else into this? -- (WT-en) Evan 11:09, 19 Nov 2003 (PST)
I don't own a GPS myself either. I trekked through the Himalaya, the Amazon forest and the Australian desert without one, but I think it could add some value here. After all it's getting more and more used in cars, etc... (WT-en) DhDh 12:17, 19 Nov 2003 (PST)
I think it would be great to have coordinates for some things. If I didn't have a map of the city it would be great to punch in the coordinate and immediately know which direction to start walking. I know when I come to a new place (especially small cities) and I want to go the nearest Subway, I just look it up in my GPS and goto -- much faster then looking up an address in a map (if I even have one). Coverage map[edit]

You know what would be cool? Once we can put geographical coordinates into articles, we could have an auto-generated world map that showed points for each article in the system. We'd have a clear vision of what parts of the world we've got guides for. OK, well, that's distant future stuff, but interesting nonetheless. --(WT-en) Evan 19:08, 29 Jan 2004 (EST)

You could even start putting in coordinates and until the plotting function is available here, link to an external web site that plots them on a map. I've got a GPS full of waypoints that need a home. :) (WT-en) Fuzheado 19:56, 29 Jan 2004 (EST)
Evan, perhaps we should look at UMN's Mapserver Package(http://mapserver.gis.umn.edu/). It's suppose to be useful to integrates maps with websites, and does some minor GIS functions. -- (WT-en) Yosemite 20:12, 29 Jan 2004 (EST)

GPS locations and waypoints[edit]

Hi all! Since this is a tech-savy kind of travelling guide, I'd like to start puting GPS locations in for some of the entries. For a city, the GPS coords are not too useful, but for places like where to eat and where to sleep it would be invaluable to have those coordinates -- just pump them into the GPS and now you don't need to ask for directions!

My thoughts on this are that instead of just having text that gives the lat/lon, we should have some kind of easy way to download this information. The nice folks over geocaching have a way of doing this, but I don't know if there's a more general and less GPS-model-specific way of doing this. What do y'all think? -- (WT-en) Virosa 09:53, 25 Feb 2005 (EST)

maybe you could make something like wix form the off-line reader expedition to to generate waypoint lists from wikitext and update wikitext from waypoint lists. --(WT-en) elgaard 10:36, 25 Feb 2005 (EST)
in the meantime, what is the preferred formatting, syntax, and abbreviation for adding the info to a wiki page? How about something like this --> (WGS 84) N 24 deg. 33.126' W 81 deg. 47.578' <-- it may seem superfluous to include the datum, but I would hold that this is critical info that should be included. --(WT-en) FordPrefect
There is ongoing work in [1]. Why not use the <geo> tag? --(WT-en) Jens Kammann
There's a tool for converting between all the formats used by all popular GPS receivers (GPSrs) and mapping application called gpsbabel. So writing a script to supply a user with a file in his prefered format is easy. Also note that there are more than 3 popular ways to write GPS coordinates (DD MM.MMM like geocaching, DD.DDDDD and DD MM SS.S). In this case it may also be ideal for the user to be able to set his preferences). I've described how I think coordinates should be embedded in the feature requests page and embedded a few in Pretoria. (WT-en) Nic 03:58, 23 Jun 2005 (EDT)

I'd like to link from earth.google.com to bits that I plan to insert to wikivoyage - mostly in Hokkaido for now. What's the preferred way to do that? (WT-en) Reto Stamm

Location[edit]

Swept from the pub:

It was a happy surprise to see that we have the coordinates in the upper right corner of some articles. I think I wrote a feature request about it last year on WT. However many articles don't have it yet. Does anyone know if it'd be possible to somehow automatically import the coordinates from WP or do we have to type in the location coordinates for each article that doesn't have them yet one by one? After migration, we will add WikiData to our project. Then it should be possible to get coordinates for instance from other language branches or from Wikimedia sister projects. --Unger (talk) 12:44, 15 October 2012 (CEST)
