Gapado (가파도, 加波島) is an island south of Jeju island and north of Marado Island. It is accessible by ferry. While often overlooked compared to Marado, the island is much flatter and thus visitors can walk right along the coastline and the water rather than high up on a cliff. There are places to stay overnight, but most visitors take a return ferry which provides about 2 hours on the island, enough time to walk around the coast.
Get in
[edit]Ferries leave from Unjin marina on Jeju. This is 30 minutes by bus from Moseulpo in the south-west of Jeju island. There are 6 return services per day. The last departure from Gapado is at 16:10. Check this page for current times and prices. You will need a Korean ID or a passport to take the ferry.
The island is situated in a marine park, the fee for which is included in your ferry ticket.
Get around
[edit]The island has a coastline of just over 4 kilometres. Bicycles can be rented near the ferry dock, however it is also very easy to walk and mostly flat.
See
[edit]- 1 Gapado Lookout (Just west of the main road heading south from the port, near the cluster of buildings in the centre of the island). A lookout platform on the highest part of the island (still only about 20 metres above sea level). Easy to walk to with a nice view. Free.
- Barley fields. Gapado is used to farm barley. This is harvested in April and May, when the island hosts a green barley festival. Free.
Do
[edit]- Olle Trail Route 10-1. The island is part of the Jeju Olle trail, hosting route 10-1. This route has an S shape that cuts through the middle of the island as well as the coast. As it ends on the opposite side of the island, walkers will have to return to the ferry port. The walk could easily be done in an hour if walking fast, but it is best to enjoy the view. Free.
