Havre is a town in Montana. About 9,300 people lived there in 2020.

Understand[edit]

Havre is home to Montana State University – Northern. Havre serves as the "big city" for a huge radius of small towns. The nearest major city, Great Falls, is about 120 miles (190 km) to the south. Wild Horse Border Crossing into Canada is 44 miles north and it is one of the lowest volume ports between the countries.

Towns along US Highway 2 in Montana are usually referred to as being on the "Hi Line".

Get around[edit]

The town stretches along US Highway 2 for several miles. The majority of businesses, restaurants, and motels are in this path which means you will probably need a car to get around.

  • 1 Too Close For Comfort Site (Wahkpa Chu'gn), 1753 US Hwy 2 W (Behind Holiday Village Mall), +1 406-265-4000. Memorial Day-Labor Day: 9AM-4PM daily. Archaeological site at a location that had been used as a buffalo jump by three different Native American groups. Tour begins at the entrance behind Holiday Village Mall and is weather dependent. Adults (18-64) $15, seniors (65+) $11, youth (13-11) $9, children (6-12) $5, under 6 free.
  • 2 Fort Assinniboine, US Hwy 87 southwest of town, +1 406 265-4000, +1 406 265-8336. June 1-Labor Day: tours begin at noon and 5PM daily. Fort built by the United States Army in 1879, in the aftereat Sioux War of 1876. $6 adults, $5 seniors, $4 students, children under 6 free.
  • 3 Frank DeRosa Railroad Museum (Havre Beneath The Streets), 120 3rd Ave, +1 406-265-8888, . Call phone number to book a tour. Rail and gritty underground dioramas from Havre's past. When fire destroyed most of the town, many businesses moved into the basements and connected the basements with each other while the town was rebuilt. Adult $17, child (6-12) $9, under 5 free.
  • 4 Montana Dinosaur Trail - H. Earl Clack Memorial Museum, 2 5th Ave, +1 406 265-4000, . Summer: M-Sa 10AM-5PM, Su noon–5PM; winter: Tu-Sa 1-5PM. History center. It is part of the Montana Dinosaur Trail. Adults $3, children (6-12) $2, under 5 free.

  • 1 Bear Paw Ski Bowl (29 miles south, take 5th Ave South, when the highway ends you are there), +1 406 265-8404, . Jan-Mar Sa Su 10:30AM-4PM. Downhill ski area. Managed by all-volunteer group of local skiers, this ski hill is inexpensive and rustic.
  • 2 Disc Golf, 300 13th St W. Open daylight hours. An 18 hole disc golf course at MSU-Northern. Free.
