The Pando Department is an undeveloped, sparsely populated, densely forested and remote region in the Tropical Lowlands of Boliviain the Amazon Basin on the border with Brazil.

Pando's two main cities are:

  • 1 Cobija Cobija on Wikipedia — the departmental capital on the banks of the Rio Acre across from the Brazilian city of Brasiléia, to which it is connected by two bridges
  • 2 Porvenir Porvenir, Pando on Wikipedia — a city of 4,300 people (2012) on National Routes 13 and 16

Pando is close to navigable waterways leading to the Amazon River and from there on to the Atlantic Ocean.

The main economic activities are agriculture, timber and cattle.

At an altitude of 280 metres above sea level in the northwestern jungle region, Pando is in the rainiest part of Bolivia. Pando has a hot climate, with temperatures commonly above 26 °C.

Get in[edit]

Cobija is about 600 km north of La Paz. Cobija is served by major Bolivian airlines at Captain Aníbal Arab Airport (CIJ IATA) and by buses from Riberalta. The Interoceanic Highway passes through the city of Cobija.

  • 1 Manuripi-Heath Amazonian Wildlife National Reserve Manuripi-Heath Amazonian Wildlife National Reserve on Wikipedia — protects the Amazon rainforest ecosystem, and provides habitat for jaguars, pumas, capybaras, a variety of monkeys, bears, toads, frogs, snakes, turtles, lizards, alligators, 1000 species of birds and a variety of fish. It is also the home of the Tacana, Pacahuara, Iñaparis and Araona indigenous peoples.
  • Nuestra Señora del Pilar Cathedral in Cobija on the city's main square
  • International Recreational Fishing Championship of Puerto Rico is held over three days in mid-June (as of 2022).
