  • 1 Lindow Moss. Lindow Moss' origins go back to the last Ice Age. When the glaciers were melting the gravel sand and clay was carried from the Pennines and deposited on the Cheshire plains. Lindow Man, also known as Pete Marsh, is the name given to the naturally preserved bog body of a Late Iron Age man, discovered in Lindow Moss peat bog (on the Mobberley side of the border with Wilmslow) on 1 August 1984 by commercial peat-cutters. • 2 Quarry Bank, Styal, Wilmslow, SK9 4LA (Road: pick up brown signs on M56 Manchester Airport spur road. Train: Styal station is ½ mi from the site entrance), +44 1625 527468, . Daily 10:30AM-5PM. National Trust museum on a large site, encompassing the quaint village of Styal. Samuel Greg's wonderfully-preserved cotton mill was a harsh and dangerous workplace for men, women and children in the 18th and 19th centuries. The working machinery demonstrates the simple genius of the Industrial Revolution, as well as the almost unbearable noise and acrid dust clouds that were a daily reality for workers. There are brilliant expert guided tours of the Greg family home, of a typical working family's cottage in Styal, and of the Apprentice House, where kids and young people aged 5 to 21 lived between 12-hr shifts. It's a National Trust site, so you bet there are pretty gardens, shops and a tea room in between all the history. Adult £19, child £9.50, NT members free.
