Rosyth docks looking east

Rosyth is a port town in Fife, Scotland. It was built in the early 20th century to house the workers at the nearby Rosyth Naval Dockyard.

Get in

By Road

Rosyth is 12 miles north of Edinburgh, follow M90 across the new Forth road bridge. (Cyclists must use the old bridge A9000). For the town, exit at junction 1C. For the navy base and industrial estate, exit at junction 1B immediately after the bridge.

By Rail

Rosyth is on the Fife Circle line, with trains every 30 min from Edinburgh via Haymarket and Inverkeithing, taking 30 min. These trains continue via Dunfermline and Cowdenbeath to Glenrothes-with-Thonton. Make sure you're on the clockwise loop train: the anticlockwise train is also shown as Glenrothes-with-Thornton but from Inverkeithing it follows the coast east to Kirkcaldy, with Rosytth receding behind you.

By Bus

Fife council's free shuttle bus operates from the Ferrytoll Park and Ride interchange to Rosyth ferry terminal. Stagecoach operates numerous services linking Ferrytoll with the rest of Fife and across the Forth Road Bridge to Edinburgh.

But not by boat

- Unless you're in the Royal Navy. A passenger ferry plied between Rosyth and Zeebrugge from 2002 to 2010 then was axed, so there are no direct ferries between Scotland and continental Europe. A freight line continued until 2018 then that too was axed. Given the trends in 21st century travel and haulage, there's no realistic prospect of these ferries resuming.

See

  • 1 Rosyth Castle. Until the early 20th Century, Rosyth Castle was almost completely surrounded by the sea. Now, it is a slightly incongruous sight, surrounded as it is by the naval dockyards and industrial buildings, which were built on land reclaimed from the sea. The castle consists of a tower house and courtyard, largely dating from the late 15th century. It's not normally possible to access the interior of the tower house.
