La Grange is a city of about 9,000 people (2018) in the Kentucky Derby Region. It is 22 mi (35 km) from Louisville.

Understand

The new town was named for Château de la Grange-Bléneau, the French country estate of Gilbert du Motier, the American Revolutionary hero better known as the Marquis de Lafayette, who had visited the area in 1824.

The Kentucky Department of Corrections maintains four correctional facilities in La Grange. Approximately 4,000 inmates of various security levels are housed at these institutions.

The La Grange historic district contains numerous small businesses such as shops, eateries, and art galleries.

La Grange hosts a Farmers and Artisan Market, a Kentucky Proud Market, where locally made items are sold. The market is open from mid-May through late October.

La Grange used to be what locals call "moist"—packaged alcohol sales were prohibited, but larger restaurants (seating at least 100) were (and still are) allowed to sell alcohol by the drink. Since 2012, the city has been "wet".
