North America > Central America > Nicaragua > Caribbean Nicaragua > Pearl Lagoon

Pearl Lagoon also known as Laguna de Perlas is a town on the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua, across the bay from Bluefields.

Understand

[edit]
Municipal wharf of Pearl Lagoon

Pearl Lagoon is a small town, with dirt roads and palm trees with an English-speaking Creole community. The town has roughly 9000 inhabitants.

Most of the inhabitants are Creole, but a large number of Miskito, Mestizo and some Garifuna are also present. The Mestizo people started migrating in the late 1990s, some from the city of El Rama and some from the northern part of the municipality of Pearl Lagoon.

Similar to Bluefields, May Pole is a big celebration among the people. Now within the same month of May, people from all over the municipality would come together in the community of Pearl Lagoon to celebrate and share their different cultures and traditions.

The most traditional dish in the community is best known as Rondon (a fish dish). The people are also well known for their delicious coconut bread, which is also something that is sold on a daily basis for the income of many.

Get in

[edit]

By boat

[edit]

Boats from Bluefields (roughly US$10 one way) used to be the only practicable way of getting there, however dirt roads to the town have been built.

By bus

[edit]

There is one daily bus from Rama leaving at 15:00 and returning to Rama at 06:00. Reportedly there is also a direct bus from Managua's Mercado Mayoreo (where buses to Rama leave), but don't count on it.
