Begusarai is in a city of 250,000 people (2011) in the Mithila region of Bihar.

Agriculture is the mainstay of the economy. The main cash crops of the Begusarai district are oilseeds, aniseed/ tisi, tobacco, jute, potato, red chilies, tomato and rape-seed. Begusarai has become a major contributor in producing litchi, mango, guava and banana. Basil leaves and pearl farming also attract local farmers.
