Aniwa is a small island in southern Vanuatu, specifically in the region of Tafea, with a population under 400. It is fairly close to the larger island of Tanna.

History

It was visited by missionary John Paton in the mid-1800s, who converted the island to Christianity. Remnants of John Paton's residence may still exist on the island. He built his base on the top of the island, since it was considered an unlucky location by the islanders, and he wanted to prove their superstitions wrong.

The main village is Ikaokao, the others being Itamotou, Imalé, Isavaï and Namsafoura.

There is a road which goes from the airport to Ikaokao, which is in the south of Aniwa.
