Understand

Jacobabad is named after Brigadier-General John Jacob CB (1812 – 1858), an officer of the British East India Company who planned and supervised the transformation of thousands of acres of desert into arable land sourring the city with the excavation of the Begaree Canal.

The city is one of the hottest places on earth, with summer temperatures regularly rising to a mean temperature of 37 °C (99 °F). In particular, compounded by the humidity and climate change, Jacobabad has been the site exceeding a wet-bulb temperature of 35 °C (95 °F), a temperature where human bodies can no longer cool themselves. The city experiences a short winter during December and January with a daily mean of 15 °C (59 °F) while spring and autumn temperatures are around 25 °C (77 °F) to 30 °C (86 °F).

  • 1 Victoria Tower. Built in 1888.
  • 2 Grave of John Jacob.
  • 3 Tomb of Muslim British Soldiers. A tomb, unfortunately quite neglected, dedicated to local Muslim soldiers who enlisted in the British colonial army.
  • 4 Jamia Mosque (In the village of Usto Bhaledinoabad, 11 km southwest of the city). One of the most decorated mosques in this region, built in 1911.
