  • Mud volcanoes. Southwest of Niland at the intersection of Schrimpf Rd. and Wister Rd. To reach from Niland, go south about 2.5 miles (4.0 km) on Highway 111 to Schrimpf Road, Turn right onto Schrimpf (note: Schrimpf and Wister are graded dirt roads but are well maintained and should be passable by all passenger cars). Go west for 3.4 miles (5.5 km) on Schrimpf Rd. to Wister Rd. Turn right onto Wister Rd. The mud volcanoes will be in a dirt field on the right side of Wister Rd. (Note: Wister Rd. may also be signed as Davis Rd.) Here, CO2 gas bubbling up through mud has created mud volcanoes ranging from a few inches high to more than 8 feet (2.4 m) tall. Activity in the various vents range from slowly seeping mud to whistling tubes to mud being thrown vigorously into the air. Bubbling pools and mudpots are also found in this field.

  • Slab City - Located a few miles northeast of Niland, Slab City is a remote corner of the desert built on the foundations (slabs) of the former World War II US Marine Camp Dunlap. It is home to permanent and itinerant residents consisting of snow birds, artists, military veterans, anarchists, neo-libertarians and others living in motorhomes and camping trailers who have formed an informal off-grid community. Salvation Mountain, a brightly colored religious artwork that covers an entire hillside, is the most prominent of many artistic works that visitors will encounter while driving through the area.
