Port Washington is a hamlet in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York.

Understand

[edit]

Port Washington is the main community in the Greater Port Washington area of the Town of North Hempstead. It tried incorporating itself as a city in the past – but the plans were unsuccessful, and as a result, it remains an unincorporated community governed by the Town of North Hempstead.

In addition to the hamlet, the Greater Port Washington area is the anchor community for the Villages of Baxter Estates, Manorhaven, Port Washington North, and Sands Point, and also serves as the anchor community for parts of the Village of Flower Hill.

People

[edit]

Port Washington is a diverse community. It is home to large Italian, Jewish, and Asian populations, as well as a decent-sized Hispanic/Latino population (especially in the Village of Manorhaven). As such, you will likely hear many languages spoken. English is by far the most dominant. Spanish is also spoken quite frequently.

Stay safe

[edit]

Port Washington is generally a safe place to visit. Contrary to the rumors, Manorhaven is not very dangerous and in reality is a diverse, welcoming community. There is, however, an industrial section in Manorhaven which is not the most eye-pleasing of areas and can feel unpleasant (like any other stereotypical industrial area).
