North America > Central America > Honduras > Caribbean Honduras > Omoa

Omoa is a city of 54,000 people (2020) in Honduras. It is a town on the Caribbean Sea coast, just west of Puerto Cortes and a short journey north of San Pedro Sula.

Understand

[edit]
Omoa, Honduras

Omoa was the main Caribbean port of Honduras until the mid-19th century. Now it is a very laid-back, very small, picturesque beach town and a pleasant day trip from San Pedro Sula.

Get in

[edit]

Take the divided highway from San Pedro Sula to Puerto Cortes. Turn north and drive for about 15 minutes. You'll see the signs for Omoa. Turn right at the sea-life fountain and go about 800 m (half a mile) to the beach.

Get around

[edit]

The beach area of Omoa is small and walkable, but there are cabs available. It would be easy enough to walk from the beach area to the fort for many people.
