Understand

[edit]

The state capital is Boston. It faces the Atlantic Ocean to the east and shares its borders with New Hampshire and Vermont to the north, New York to the west, and Rhode Island and Connecticut to the south.

The eastern part of Massachusetts consists of coastal plains along the Atlantic Ocean, with sandy cod capes protruding in the southeast, along with numerous islands. In the central region, the New England upland, an extension of the Appalachian Mountains, runs north to south, and the Connecticut River, which originates from this area, flows from north to south, forming a broad and fertile valley. The highest point in the state, Greylock (1,064 meters), is located to the north of the Taconic Mountains near the western state border. Massachusetts has a humid continental climate. Winters are cold and lengthy, especially in the western mountainous areas, where there is approximately 2,000 mm of snowfall, which often does not melt until spring. However, the coastal regions have milder winters, and Boston receives an average annual precipitation of about 1,000 mm, which is evenly distributed throughout the year. Coastal areas are often covered in thick fog during the summer due to the influence of the nearby Atlantic Ocean.
