Cylinder Beach on N Stradbroke Island
See Redlands for the city in California

Redland City (colloquially called The Redlands) is the southeasternmost of all localities in the Greater Brisbane with a population of 156,863 (2018). It's the least visited of all the five LGAs of Greater Brisbane, and also perhaps the "most forgotten" of them all. The Redlands do not have many tourist facilities, and the only major tourist draw is North Stradbroke Island.

[edit]

By train

[edit]

The primary station in Redland City is 1 Cleveland railway station Cleveland railway station on Wikipedia which has only one line; the Cleveland railway line going to the suburbs of Bowen Hills, Northgate, Doomben, Central and Shorncliffe.

By car

[edit]

Redland City is the only city in Greater Brisbane to have no motorways, but rather just an urban road from Brisbane CBD. From the CBD, it's approximately 30 km (19 mi), taking a bit more than half an hour when there is no traffic.

From BNE CBD, enter onto the M3 Pacific Motorway but try and keep to the leftmost lane as possible as you will need to exit onto Exit 2 to Vulture Street (Route 41), which is less than a few hundred metres from the entry ramp. Once you are on State Route 41, continue on SR 41 until Old Cleveland Road (SR 22). Turn left east onto Old Cleveland Road, and continue on State Route 22 until the end of the route to Cleveland.

From BNE Airport, head south on the tolled M1 Gateway Motorway and take Exit 87 onto State Route 22 Old Cleveland Road. Turn left at the intersection and continue until the end of the route to Cleveland.

See

[edit]
  • 1 North Stradbroke Island. The world's second largest sand island, after K'gari, a couple hundred kilometeres north. The island is best known for its beaches, which present plenty of fishing, swimming and surfing opportunities. The island is also an important Indigenous Australian site, and there are some places where you can immerse yourself into Aboriginal culture. • 2 Redland Museum, 60 Smith Street, Cleveland, +61 7 3286 3494. Daily 10AM3PM. The local history museum for the Redland City. Most of what can be found is just items that have been donated by the local residents such as farm equipment, post office materials, bedroom furnishings, dolls, textiles, and a toy exhibition. All that adds up to over 20,000 items on display. Redland Museum (Q23073813) on Wikidata Redland Museum on Wikipedia
  • 3 Cleveland Point Light (Point Cleveland Light, Old Cleveland Lighthouse), 238 Shore St N, Cleveland. What was a useful navigational point in the mid-19th century now remains one of only two lighthouses shaped as a wooden hexagonal tower. Today, the newer Cleveland Point Light has largely taken over responsibility and the old one remains as a council-managed historic site where you can visit the outside (though the inside of the lighthouse remains closed). • Redland Art Gallery, 95-97 Bloomfield St, Cleveland and 14 Noeleen St, Capalaba, +61 7 3829 8899, . Two council-managed art galleries with a large variety of local art, mostly of contemporary/post-modern art. There are two galleries, the first is the 4 Redland Art Gallery in Capalaba and the other is the 5 Redland Art Gallery in Cleveland.
  • 6 Redland Performing Arts Centre, 2/16 Middle St, Cleveland, +61 7 3829 8131. A performing arts centre with just some local shows. Arguably, this place is aimed at locals rather than visitors, but there's nothing stopping you from going.
  • 7 Old Cleveland Police Station, 1 Passage Street, Cleveland. A 1934/5 built police station, that is now just a heritage listed place. There are some plans by the council to renovate the area and convert the police station to a museum along with a war memorial. A suburban borderline shopping centre-mall containing a large range of products for a mall of its size. However, the range has been going down since the pandemic, and now the primary reason why many visit this shopping centre is to go to the movies. If you're just going for some shopping in the area, you're better off going to the many malls in Brisbane CBD.

  • 1 Seafood Harvest, 16 Doig St., Cleveland, +61 7 3821 3954. Tu–Th Sa Su 11AM–7PM Fr 11AM–7:30PM. It's what you'd find in every coastal Australian town; a fish and chips store. There are limited dine-in options and most locals just get a takeaway. Unusually, unlike most regular fish and chip stores, this one also has burgers.

Mid-range

[edit]
  • 2 Mamma Mia Trattoria Pizzeria, 10/152 Shore St W, Cleveland, +61 7 3488 0330. A cosy Italian pizza restaurant with plenty of good pizza, pasta and risotto, along the bay of Columbus Canal.
