Brunswick City Hall

Brunswick is a city in Coastal Georgia just north of Florida, the mainland gateway to several islands in the Intracoastal Waterway, including St. Simons Island and Jekyll Island.

Brunswick can be accessed by car from Interstate 95 by Exit 29 (US Highway 17/Georgia State Route 25 Northbound), Exit 36-A (US Highway 341 / US Highway 25 / Georgia State Route 27 Southbound) or Exit 38 (Georgia State Route 25-Spur).

  • Major highways in Brunswick include Interstate 95, US Highway 17, US Highway 341 (multiplexed with US Highway 25 for almost its entire route) and Georgia State Route 303. US Highway 82's eastern terminus is at Interstate 95 Exit 29.
  • Primary north/south city streets include Glynn Av (US 17), Martin Luther King Bl, Altama Av, Habersham St and Newcastle St (US341/25).
  • Primary east/west city streets include Fourth Ave (US 341), Gloucester St (US 25), "L" St, Parkwood Dr, First St, Fourth St, GA25-Spur, Community RD (GA 303), Chappel Crossing Rd, and Glynco Parkway.
  • Brunswick can be travelled by car, on bicycle or on foot.
  • Drivers should beware that Brunswick uses Photo Enforcement of traffic laws at some intersections. As of February 2007, The intersection of L St and Martin Luther King Bl, the intersection of Altama Ave and Community Rd (GA 303) and the intersection of Glynn Ave (US 17/GA 25) and the F.J. Torras Causeway to St. Simons Island have cameras installed and in operation.

  • 2 Lanier's Oak, median of Hwy 17 (Glynn Ave). Said to be the oak that inspired Sidney Lanier to write the poem "The Marshes of Glynn", while sitting under the branches. Lanier%27s_Oak on Wikipedia
  • 3 Liberty Ships Memorial, 101 Gloucester St (in Mary Ross Waterfront Park). A plaque to commemorate the vast number of Liberty Ships produced in Brunswick during World War II to counter German forces. Sometimes there will be tall ships, cruise ships, etc moored to the landing here on Oglethorpe Bay.
  • 4 Fort King George State Historic Site, 302 McIntosh Rd, Darien, +1 912 437-4770. Tu-Su 9AM-5PM. The oldest British fort on the Georgia coastline, dating to 1721, as a deterrence to Spanish and American Indian attacks. It was subsequently abandoned and then saw resettlement of the area nearby as the town of Darien when General James Oglethorpe brought a contingent along in 1736.   • 5 Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation Historic Site, 5556 US-17, +1 912 264-7333. W-Su 9AM-5PM. Relics of a rice plantation using slave labor from the early 1800s that became a dairy with heirlooms and paths through the marsh. $8 adult, $7 senior, $5 youth (6-17). Attend the Brunswick Rockin' Stewbilee at the Mary Ross Waterfront Park in October and sample many different vendors' Brunswick Stew recipes, a tomato-based stew with okra, corn, lima beans, and meat (the most authentic purportedly being rabbit) that Brunswick, GA claims to be the originator of.

  • 1 Blythe Island Regional Park, 6616 Blythe Island Hwy, +1 912 279-2812. Daily 6AM-6PM. A park with marshes and trails to explore. Free admission, charge for camping.

  • 3 Altamaha Wildlife Management Area, 2613 US Highway 17, Darien, +1 912-262-3173. Here you can really get a sense of the marsh life at the mouth of the Altamaha River, with kayaking launches and wildlife viewing, and also find the Butler Island Plantation, where hundreds of slaves performed arduous work to cultivate rice and where now the estate looks something like a haunted house.
  • 4 Sapelo Island Visitors Center, 1766 Landing Rd, Darien, +1 912 437-3224. Tu-Sa 7:30AM-5:30PM. Coordinate ferry tours to Sapelo Island with its Hog Hammock Community, home of Gullah Geechees, an African American subtype of former slaves, Reynolds Mansion, and marshes and beaches, such as Nanny Goat or Blackbeard Beach.
