Carpiquet is a village a bit west of Caen in Normandy; the Caen airport is just outside it.

Understand

Canadians in Carpiquet, July 12, 1944

During World War II, the D-Day landings were on the coast in this region. The Carpiquet airfield was strategically important and there was intense fighting in and around the town starting shortly after the landings on June 6. The Germans had an entire panzer division plus some infantry in the area; the British and Canadians made several attempts to take the town but were beaten back each time until they finally took it in early July.
