Add topicArchived pages
[edit]I have archived my Wikitravel user talk page here at User talk:Pashley/Archive.
My suggested rewrite of the sex tourism policy has also been copied here, User talk:Pashley/STP.
- Hi! I changed a sentence in your policy concerning child prostitution. In most European countries any thing that "support" it is a criminal offence. I would strongly auggest to stay on the legal side and make very clear that any information concerning such activities are being deleted immediately. I think prefer is way to weak and police patrols such things in Europe today very sharp. Hope you are fine with it. Jc8136 (talk) 10:51, 25 September 2012 (CEST)
Thanks for your comments about E11
[edit]Thanks for your kind words about the E11 article. Currently I am not aware of any good example in WikiVoyage of an itinerary, so any help to improve this one is welcome. I feel pretty much like pioneering. DrMennoWolters (talk) 16:21, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
- What I meant is one or two articles that can serve as example. Wikipedia:WikiProject Hiking trails - excuse me for this inline link to WP - qualifies one article in WP as "featured" and six as "good", but that is of course for the encyclopedic type of article. Which of the many itineraries in WikiVoyage, dealing with a long-distance trail, could serve as an example? Let us move this discussion to a more general platform, like the Discussion page of E11 hiking trail or the Travellers' pub or maybe a Talk page linked to the Wikivoyage:Itineraries project or one of the related articles. [edit]Thanks for your welcome. How can I translate the coord template (e.g. from the Wikipedia sandy hook article) to the Wikivoyage sandy hook article. The template I want to translate is:

Retiring Abroad question
[edit]This is my first attempt at this, so please forgive any gaffes. I thought I might add something to the Retiring Abroad article about my experience retiring in the US and moving to Poland. I thought I'd start simple with the visa question then realized that my story doesn't seem to slot into any of the defined categories. I was told by the Polish Consulate in LA that they couldn't give me a long-term visa, and as a US citizen I had no need of a short-term visa. I had 90 days allowed in country without a visa (an extension of the Schengen Agreement) and I had to apply at the provincial government office in whatever area I decided to settle for a long-term visa of any type. My wife is a Polish native and so the process I had to go through might be different from other retirees, but I'd be willing to do some research on the matter if I could figure out where to put the results. Thanks for your time --Jimmu

External links discussion
[edit]My revert: http://en.wikivoyage.org/w/index.php?title=Greek_Islands&diff=next&oldid=2116531
Anon comment:
OK thanks. The external links policy means you can't make use of the resource which is a shame, but no way around that. I had persuaded CMS (55 years plus experience of the islands) to release it as non-copyrighted data and was hoping to persuade him to contribute now he is retired. If you change policy please go ahead and undo. Over and out.

- I'd agree that it might be a stretch at the Asia continental level but thanks for raising it at Talk:Southeast_Asia#Water_sports.3F. As you'll see from what I wrote there, it is such an extraordinary natural wonder that I think we should still keep a place for it at this sub-continental level of Southeast_Asia. Let's hope that some more folks comment there since it is difficult to reach a consensus when only two people hold such diametrically opposed views. -- Alice✉ 02:02, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Investor visa in Brazil
[edit]Hi there. Sorry it took a little longer to get around to this. I haven't found exactly what I was looking for, but Brazil does have an investor visa if the applicant invests at least US$50,000, though information on it in English is scattered. - Yes, Childs also got a boost when it was featured. One caveat, though: The tool is designed for Wikipedia, not Wikivoyage, and if you change any of the settings in the input boxes (language, date range, or article), it will default to Wikipedia. You have to play games with the URL to get Wikivoyage statistics to show up. LtPowers (talk) 18:57, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
Acheng
[edit]Hi Pashley, in an effort to delete and recreate almost-empty articles (to lose the WT link), I was looking to recreate Acheng. I'm not familiar with the Chinese administrative structures, however, and I'm a bit at a loss. If I understand correctly (just from the WP article), it's a sort of administrative district of Harbin. You created the article, however, and did call it a city. Indeed, WP also mentions a city of Acheng. Are these two different entities, or does the city serve as a district? I'll recreate it just the way you did for now, but would be interested to get a better understanding. Thanks! JuliasTravels (talk) 18:14, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
- Okay, I think it actually was a city of its own, but was merged with Harbin a number of years ago. That leaves the question if we should treat it as a destination of its own, or as a district of Harbin :-) Thanks! JuliasTravels (talk) 18:34, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
- China has an odd system, see List_of_Chinese_provinces_and_regions#Lower-level_divisions. For example, see Fuzhou#Districts; the prefecture includes both urban districts and rural counties. There is no separate city government; the administrative structure is all at prefecture or district & county level. Some counties are centered on towns of half a million or so; those have no separate town gov't, just a county gov't. If a Chinese says he is from "Fuzhou", it can mean anywhere in the prefecture, not just the actual city. If he says "Changle", it can mean anywhere in the county, not just the actual town.
- I suspect the Acheng/Harbin relation is something like that, but am not actually certain. I don't know that part of the country. Pashley (talk) 21:50, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
- Alright. That would suggest that its an administrative merge, not so much a physical agglomeration of the towns, and from a travellers point of view this place would probably have to be seen as a destination of its own (considering also the size). I'll leave it like this then, and hope someone with more knowledge of the exact local situation will come by some day :-) Thanks for the reply. JuliasTravels (talk) 08:00, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I wrote a response to your revert at Wikivoyage talk:No real world threats but I don't know if you've seen it yet. Would I be allowed to create a subsection of the policy page and soft redirect it to meta:Threats of harm? Or should I use a separate page and point the subsection there? I'm thinking others might search for certain terms like Wikivoyage:Suicide and Wikivoyage:Threats of suicide.
The rationale I gave was basically that different procedures exist for dealing with threats of suicide vs dealing with threats of litigation. For example, blocking is never the correct procedure when someone is threatening suicide, but always applied in cases of legal threats. TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 04:12, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

Support request with team editing experiment project
[edit]Dear tech ambassadors, instead of spamming the Village Pump of each Wikipedia about my tiny project proposal for researching team editing (see here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Research_team_editing), I have decided to leave to your own discretion if the matter is relevant enough to inform a wider audience already. I would appreciate if you could appraise if the Wikipedia community you are more familiar with could have interest in testing group editing "on their own grounds" and with their own guidance. In a nutshell: it consists in editing pages as a group instead of as an individual. This social experiment might involve redefining some aspects of the workflow we are all used to, with the hope of creating a more friendly and collaborative environment since editing under a group umbrella creates less social exposure than traditional "individual editing". I send you this message also as a proof that the Inspire Campaign is already gearing up. As said I would appreciate of *you* just a comment on the talk page/endorsement of my project noting your general perception about the idea. Nothing else. Your contribution helps to shape the future! (which I hope it will be very bright, with colors, and Wikipedia everywhere) Regards from User:Micru on meta.

Wolves
[edit]I note you added the section on wolves into Dangerous animals. I am uneasy about the sentence that wolves are extremely dangerous if provoked. My understanding is that you generally should behave aggressively if a wolf is approaching you, which could be though of as provoking it and our advice thus lead to people not defending themselves. Is there a real risk that a wolf would choose to fight out of pride?
The issue is probably best discussed at the talk page.
Spurious maps
[edit]Hi, I've replied to your comment on the Grand Trunk Road. I hardly edit here at all, so I don't know what the usual procedure is with citations (there seem to be very few of them in place). I've improved the EN wikipedia a bit, but have been finding that the problem of spurious maps cannot be combatted in Commons, where nothing can be deleted if it is in use on other projects (see here if you are interested in the bureaucratic problem). Consequently, maps in Commons cannot be trusted. Sorry, I didn't mean to edit war with you. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 13:14, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

[edit]I created a guide for English for Philippines-related destinations articles, which provides a guide on English spelling, and differences in vocabulary (including British words in Philippine English, terms only used in Philippine English, or English words that has a different meaning in Philippine English)
Here is a list of some English vocabulary that are only used in the Philippines, or have a different meaning in Philippine English.
- carnap - to steal a car
- center island - raised median divider (usually with trees and plants)
- city/town proper - downtown; city/town/municipal center; poblacion area (usually found in road signs)
- computer shop - internet café
- diversion road - bypass road (though the two terms are often interchanged)
- ecobag - cloth bag
- estafa - swindling (usually a legal term)
- footbridge - pedestrian overpass (can also mean any pedestrian bridge)
- gutter - curb
- hand-carry - carry-on baggage
- maniac - sexually perverted person
- motel - low cost hotels, known for hourly rates and notorious for being a haven for illicit sex (similar to the Japanese "love hotels")
- pension house - family-owned guest house
- post - utility pole (from Spanish poste "pole", also borrowed into Philippine languages)
- presidentiable - candidate for president
- rotunda - roundabout (from Spanish rotunda, also borrowed into Philippine languages)
- rubber shoes - sneakers
- salvage - summary execution (though the more universal term "extrajudicial killing/EJK" slowly replaces it from 2016, after the start of Rodrigo Duterte's anti-drug campaign)
- side mirror - side-view mirrors
- vetsin - generic trademark for monosodium glutamate
- village - residential subdivision
If you can specify other words that have a different meaning or unique to Philippine English, you may help. And in my opinion, a separate article about Philippine English (as a Talk sub-topic) may be possible to handle all of those cases. TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 10:10, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
- As a foreigner in the country, I think the only new words I've learned are jeepney & barangay, plus some new usage like comfort room & the Filipino use of "load". I'd say pretty much all a visitor really needs is already in the infobox at Philippines#Talk; in fact I want to shorten that. On the other hand, if you want to do this, why not? Pashley (talk) 01:42, 6 July 2017 (UTC)
That can be possible on a separate article, as what you pointed, you want the "Talk" section to be short. When I will create the "Philippine English" article, that can be linked to it as one of the "see also" articles along with the Filipino phrasebook. My purpose for that is to further explain the English used in the Philippines, like the differences in vocabulary (like those I shown on this thread), and also grammatical differences, peculiar pronunciations (like the Visayans pronouncing written short "e" as a short "i"), and usage in speech (usually code-switching, like Taglish) TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 02:58, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

"Cities" sections
[edit]hi Pashley thank you for your advice on iran i omited one city that is less important than other and one important city. i think it is better we have some advantage to select city, like unesco world heritage sites or some thing like this. in that list we have some city that are not important to international travel who come to Wikivoyage to have good travel like qom and we don,t have some city like kerman that have 5 sites in unesco list. if you are agree i change that list. thank you Sadegh sadegh (talk) 05:13, 25 October 2017 (UTC)
- If I may, Sadegh sadegh: As I already said on my user talk page, you must post your argument to Talk:Iran and wait for some time (probably several days, at least) until a consensus either develops or does not develop in favor of your proposal. It is quite insufficient for you to convince one or two people individually on their user talk pages. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:29, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

[edit]Regarding this, please see this user's contribution history and specifically this diff. This is a spammer that ThunderingTyphoons and I have been dealing with lately, albeit with a far more sophisticated MO than the bots we're used to. Help for Batangas, Batangas City pages
[edit]I am currently working on fixing the page for Batangas and starting out the page for Batangas City, but there are no other users editing on those. I moved some hotel entries for Batangas City from the Batangas page, added other destination that should have their own pages (Taal; Taal Volcano, resort towns i.e. Calatagan, Lian, Mabini, Nasugbu, San Juan; Talisay), and created more detailed "Get in" and "Get around" sections. Can you help on this pages? TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 18:19, 2 April 2018 (UTC)
Sex Tourism Policy..
[edit]I note you had a more extensive redraft of this. Any reason why it can't be swapped in? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:14, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Draft is at User_talk:Pashley/STP. I see no reason it should not be swapped in but, like everything on this topic, that might be controversial. Pashley (talk) 10:22, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks, Also note that a recent US law has much enhanced anti-trafficking provisions, My reading of (w:Stop_Enabling_Sex_Traffickers_Act) is that there is no longer Section 230 protection in this area, Something for WMF legal? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:39, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, I think WMF legal should have a look at this. Pashley (talk) 11:01, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- My next suggestion would therefore be that an adminstrator (or group of administrators) makes an appropriate formal request to the relevant WMF legal contact then. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:11, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
Speedy request
[edit]Can you speedy, User:ShakespeareFan00/Kinkspace, already blanked? Despite being drafted in good faith, it's my view it would not be possible to reconcile it with certain policy. Therefore it will never be a viable travel topic. Already blanked, and thus can be speedy deleted (same logic as CSD #U1 on English Wikipedia. Thanks ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 10:51, 10 April 2018 (UTC)
- Done, though I'd say it had some potential to become a valid travel topic. Pashley (talk) 10:59, 10 April 2018 (UTC)

Concerns
[edit]Noticed something off in the Recent changes so decided to make a check on this IP's history. Special:Contributions/69.178.194.21
Would appreciate an admin reverting to an appropriate version of the articles, revison deleteing this IP's contributions (not sure Wikivoyage has oversighters) and lodging the appropriate paperwork with the originating ISP (in North Dakota apparently), the edit summaries suggest this was targeted vandalism, rather than a new user making a test edit. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:18, 12 April 2018 (UTC)
- Well spotted. Another admin had already reverted & banned the user by the time I checked. If you notice more like this, report them at Wikivoyage:Vandalism in progress. Pashley (talk) 00:34, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

Tipping in the Philippines
[edit]Tipping is also expected in the Philippines, especially in the form of a service charge, but I don't see anything about those in its country page. If you have been on the Philippines, have you expected to be tipped, and what is the usual percentage? You may even update the page about tipping into add this new info. TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 13:26, 4 May 2018 (UTC)
- Good question, but I have no good answer. I've been spending winters in the Philippines & going back to Canada for summers for several years now. This time, I arrived in November & will leave in two more weeks. I'm not sure if there is a "usual percentage" or other rule we could give.

Driving in the Philippines page
[edit]I am currently working on driving-related sections of the Philippines page as well as some regional pages, and creating a draft for a separate page for the Driving in the Philippines page (currently on my sandbox). With a lot of driving-related information to be written, the section in the Philippines page cannot cover everything that has not been worked on, that having most info in a separate topic page is a good idea. Any questions or thoughts about it?.--TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 05:11, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

I noticed you were the one who created the “ADD” redirect. I recently created an article about traveling with ADHD. I made a redirect for [[ADHD], and I wanted to make another redirect for the alternate name for the condition as well. But it’s already in use. Would you mind if I moved it? Vulcandor (talk) 01:49, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
- No problem. I created a lot of airport code redirects a while back. Please check if the redirect is in use, though. Pashley (talk) 07:17, 21 October 2018 (UTC)
K7L made several edits of this nature. Why did you rollback this one and only this one? You either pressed it by accident or did it for good reason, I'm pretty sure of that. I'm wondering, though, because it seems so odd to do this. Thanks. --Comment by Selfie City (talk | contributions) 03:22, 12 November 2018 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks.but please tell me more about this website. Kutlo Queen (talk) 14:02, 21 November 2018 (UTC)
I just added hotel and resort listings on the Mabini article, but I have not much idea of other activities and destinations, other than the resorts and scuba diving spots, because I haven't even reached them yet. I don't know if you might have been there, but I agree more work is needed (Mabini is just a new page here, but there is a significant number of listings of interest there). Mabini should have its own page with significant coverage as like those in Boracay, Puerto Galera, Panglao Island, etc., if it hasn't been left out.--TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 06:03, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
- I know almost nothing about that region, might visit it for the first time a few months from now. There are some fair-sized towns like w:Lemery, Batangas that lack articles here. Pashley (talk) 06:11, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
- I'm sure you agree Mabini should have been significantly covered from the ground up, not left out in favor of spots like Boracay and Puerto Galera. The rest of Batangas should have been significantly covered also, given its proximity to Manila, however, lack of interest in editing by earlier users have made the region lag behind those far from the metro, which have became more covered. I do have knowledge of the region, but I have no further ideas.--TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 06:47, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
- I do not agree that Mabini is as important as the places you mention, or even other tourist centers like El Nido, Moalboal & Panglao, but as I do not know the area, I could easily be wrong. Certainly if you or someone else wants to improve Mabini coverage, I'm in favour of that. Pashley (talk) 10:38, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
- You may find it out if you can get there on the coming months, and in reality, Mabini has its reputation as a diving spot not too far from Manila, but not as very important as those in the islands in Visayas. The same also goes with the rest of Batangas, and it is listed as one of the "Other destinations" in the Philippines page. Locals and foreigners go there alike for the resorts and diving spots reachable from Manila within two hours by car. Mabini does have coverage in Diving in the Philippines, but having an article for the location works better with it. I am currently working with "Understand", "Get in", and "Get around", and I just have added a banner for the page, and I'm thie only user currently editing Mabini.-TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 18:45, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
Zhuhai recommendation
[edit]Hello! I see that you're a docent for Zhuhai. I'm planning a trip to Zhuhai at the end of this month (shortly before Chinese New Year). We're planning to stay in Gongbei, but maybe take a day trip to one of the islands. [edit]Thanks again for your note. I've been editing wiki pages for awhile but can't find a way to start a discussion about a possible collaboration to link Creative Commons app tours to wiki. Who do I approach? I've scoured all the help sites etc and can't find an entry. Thanks in advance for any pointers. ChufiBandit ChufiBandit (talk) 20:40, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
- Probably the pub is the best you can do. Has Has anyone other than me commented there? Pashley (talk) 20:46, 9 August 2019 (UTC)
The only other comment was someone who said "great". I don't know if there's a formal process for starting a collaboration. I could convert itineraries into tours (the idea is to have something on your cell phone that will lead you through a tour and have material pop up when you approach a point of interest. Everything would be in the CC license rules. But I'd far rather work with the people who developed the original information particip0ate. Perhaps I could contact some of them directly. ChufiBandit

Hi Pashley
I just saw your message and I am happy about that, on your user page, I saw some external links, does it matter if I add some external links on my User pages? I am looking forward to your reply with regards Chris Chrisjonesaus2 (talk) 03:47, 28 November 2019 (UTC) |

- I'd say one link, without any touting, to an employer is OK. Others might disagree.
- Some people post a long screed about how wonderful their hotel, bar or whatever is. That is definitely out of bounds. Pashley (talk) 07:35, 29 November 2019 (UTC)

Lutheran bishops
[edit]You wrote (in Christianity) that the Anglican Church "is in many ways closer to the Catholic and Orthodox churches than to other Protestant churches in doctrine and structure; for example it has bishops and archbishops, though no cardinals or pope."
So have we. I suppose there are bishops (and usually a archbishop or similar) in countries with a tradition of a Lutheran state church, while they may be absent where the Protestant Church is one out of many, without connection to the state (such as on your side of the pond).
The Anglican Church may still be closer to the Catholic Church also in organisation than Lutherans. Our archbishop is a primus inter pares, and this seems to be a common arrangement, and I suppose no Lutheran archbishop is above any other, while Anglicans (according to the article) have a "head of Church" and the Archbishop of Canterbury.
I don't know the Anglicans, nor any Protestant churches outside Northern Europe. Can you find a way to reword the paragraph to accommodate the Lutheran bishops.

Site map?
[edit]- Swept in from the pub
I just found a page in my user space whose existence I'd forgotten & that was last edited in 2015. User:Pashley/Site_map was an attempt to provide an index to all pages on the site. I'm not certain now that this is a particularly good idea or, if it is, that I'd found the right approach.
Does anyone like the idea and want to develop it? Pashley (talk) 08:48, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- simplewiki has something half of that. I'm not exactly a huge fan of that, as in my opinion, all these maintenance pages should be hidden from public view. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 08:54, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- I was not thinking of it as a maintenance page, but as an index to help readers navigate. I'm not certain it is very useful for that, though. Pashley (talk) 09:02, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- Is it similar to w:Wikipedia:Contents/A–Z index in Wikipedia? When I set up the Japanese Wikivoyage, it wasn't created because it wasn't in the English Wikivoyage. I think index is usefull for readers, but I think it's too late for that now because there are too many articles. --Tmv (talk) 09:54, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- Not exactly a maintenance page, but it's mainly the "How to pages" section that's putting it down. But apart from that, looking good. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 13:29, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- My understanding is that site maps are primarily used to allow site visitors to get a grip on the logic of the page hierarchy and find pages which were not easily found through the site's normal means of navigation. I think we should explain our geographic hierarchy, with the continents etc. just a complement. There is a try at explaining main namespace pages outside the hierarchy, but it needs to be developed. Then there are policy and help pages, which should have links to index pages (do we have complete help and guideline indexes?), the user namespace, files and templates. The category system, with a few top categories listed, could be a great help. A sitemap should be complete, I don't know whether we have any means to check whether it is. A complete list of pages would be much too long even if broken up in some way. –LPfi (talk) 13:58, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
- I like the idea of having an outline of pages listed and grouped by hierarchy. It may even be possible to be done by a bot. OhanaUnitedTalk page 04:37, 3 August 2021 (UTC)
- I was not thinking of it as a maintenance page, but as an index to help readers navigate. I'm not certain it is very useful for that, though. Pashley (talk) 09:02, 19 July 2021 (UTC)
Redirect and Disambiguation ban for Soumya-8974
[edit]Hi Pashley, I'm just letting you know that I started a thread on WV:UBN to consider Soumya-8974 to be banned for all redirects and disambiguation pages. I'm just letting you know since you've dealt with this user's redirects so many times, that your opinion would be greatly appreciated in my proposal.

Why do Wikivoyagers have to pick a side in this?
[edit]Why is there no middle road? I'd like to join the horde of Daleks shrieking, "Extermducate! Extermducate!" ;-) Ground Zero (talk) 00:08, 28 October 2021 (UTC)
- If anyone cares, the discussion this is a comment on is at Wikivoyage:User_ban_nominations/Archive#DhrGabriel. Pashley (talk) 03:12, 6 May 2023 (UTC)
Was wondering if you could contribute to the Dinosaur Provincial Park article as you created it in 2007, but it was redirected to Brooks the next year and I cannot understand why that was done. Anyway, it's now an article back again after 13 years. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 05:25, 20 November 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks; it deserves an article. I cannot contribute much since I last visited it as a child in the late 1950s. Pashley (talk) 08:53, 20 November 2021 (UTC)
How we will see unregistered users
[edit]Hi!
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Editing an archive
[edit]I routinely revert edits to archives like this, but I'm not doing so out of respect for you. My feeling is, if you think it's so important to reply to an archived thread, you should unarchive it; however, I don't think it's important to reply, in this case. Ikan Kekek (talk) 00:33, 25 January 2022 (UTC)
- Ooops. Pashley (talk) 00:37, 25 January 2022 (UTC)
Your improper deletion of Blanc Sablon-Forteau
[edit]Whilst I may have slightly favoured keeping Blanc Sablon-Forteau as a redirect (and I was okay with deletion), that is not why I'm starting this thread.
Quoting the policy:
- If, after 14 days of discussion, the consensus is to delete, an administrator may delete it.
- If, after 14 days of discussion, the consensus is to redirect or merge, any Wikivoyager may do it. If you make a redirect, please check for any resulting broken redirects or double redirects.
Now to the redirect. Blanc Sablon-Forteau was nominated on July 11 and you deleted the redirect on July 21 – meaning the discussion had only been left open for 10 days. This is contrary to policy, which requires all deletion requests to be open for 14 days unless there's a compelling reason otherwise. Care to explain why you didn't follow policy and deleted the redirect four days earlier? --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 07:58, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
- Noticed the consensus, missed the date. My mistake, thanks for pointing it out, & I'll be more careful in future.
- No big deal; it probably should have been speedied instead of nominated in the first place. Pashley (talk) 08:28, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
- Okay, but why speedy? It doesn't meet the criteria for speedy deletion. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta.wikimedia) 08:38, 21 July 2022 (UTC)
Please don't welcome LTAs and sockpuppets
[edit]Pashley, please don't welcome LTAs like you did at User talk:AussieQuarantineGuy – it just gives them the attention they seek. I see you've already been told about this before at #Welcoming Telstra again instead of reverting their vandalism, but your welcoming of AussieQuarantineGuy was not the first time you've welcomed sockpuppets before. You as an admin, especially one since the times of Wikitravel, need to be able to identify and recognise sockpuppets – it's one of the key things an admin needs to know. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 08:19, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- I welcome new users when I notice them, often without looking at their edits. If I do welcome some vandals, that seems harmless.
- In future, I'll have a look at an edit or two (when I remember) before posting. However, often it is hard to tell if an edit is constructive or vandalism & I'm definitely not going to spend significant effort on recognising puppets. Pashley (talk) 12:32, 25 August 2022 (UTC)
- Apologies for a little late response, but if you're not going to spend significant effort of recognising socks, then.... All I have to say is, you as an admin should know how to recognise a sock, especially being one since the early days of Wikitravel. Welcoming vandals is really not "harmless"; it gives them the attention they seek and makes it harder for other users to warn if necessary. Happy holidays, Pashley!
Hello Pashley, have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! It has been a pleasure to have you as a fellow Wikivoyager this year. Wherever you are, enjoy the festive season and stay warm (if you're north of the Tropic of Cancer)! Your help in maintaining, improving and expanding Wikivoyage will always be appreciated.
Greetings from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. |
New Winter Palace
[edit]You added info about the New Winter Palace in Grand old hotels as well as in Luxor/East Bank. On historic images of Google Earth I see the New Winter Palace present in February 2007 and gone in June 2009. In January 2022 it still is not there. Is it really rebuild in 2022? FredTC (talk) 11:52, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks. Looks like there were changes I was not aware of. WP has:
- In 1975 the complex was expanded with the construction of the New Winter Palace. The addition, classified as a 3-star hotel, was joined by corridors to the original. It was demolished in 2008.
- In 1996, the Pavillon, a 4-star annex with 116 rooms, was built in the rear garden of the Winter Palace, close to the swimming pool.
- I'll update the text. Pashley (talk) 13:44, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
Canada list duplicated
[edit]With [this edit] you duplicated the Canada list in the article. I'm afraid that simply deleting one of them would not result into what is wanted, because many edits have followed. FredTC (talk) 11:29, 18 January 2023 (UTC)
- Good grief. I have no idea how that happened. I've fixed Canada, but it looks like the weird edit also took out an Eastern Europe section; I'll have look at that but am not sure if I can fix it. Pashley (talk) 11:45, 18 January 2023 (UTC)
- OK, fixed that too, Pashley (talk) 11:51, 18 January 2023 (UTC)

Digital nomad visas
[edit]Hi, You deleted Digital nomad visas, "Per votes for deletion". But how come no one notified me of the deletion debate? I've been contributing to Wikimedia projects for more than 16 years and it's the first time such a thing happens to me... A455bcd9 (talk) 07:53, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
- See Talk:Digital nomad visas. Since you created the article, I'd have thought you'd have it watchlisted & would have seen that already. See also the article that replaced it, Digital nomad. Pashley (talk) 13:39, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
- Hi. I mostly edit on Wikipedia. I never check my watchlist on all other Wikimedia projects where I contribute from time to time as there are dozens of them (French and Turkish WP, French and Occitan Wiktionary, Commons, etc.). So no, I couldn't see it. Anyway it's fine but in the future: ping contributors in the talk page (notifications are cross projects) :)
- Have a good weekend, A455bcd9 (talk) 17:43, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
Copper Canyon ?
[edit]Hi Pashley! Yesterday, I deleted Copper Canyon from the article about Indigenous people in North America because it doesn't seem to fit in with a list of destinations that is tightly tied to indigenous peoples, such as monuments or historic indigenous settlements. While Copper Canyon is home to many Tarahamura, they aren't generally the reason people go there: they go for the spectacular natural scenery, to do mule treks into the canyon, to ride the scenic train...they may encounter Tarahamura, but there aren't really museums or monuments to their culture. Is there a reason you feel it should be listed? If so, I suggest expanding the description of the place to tell travelers what to look for that makes it an "indigenous" place and not just another natural wonder. Just a thought. Mrkstvns (talk) 14:25, 26 May 2023 (UTC)
- I just noticed it was in Mexico & you'd deleted it from a US list, so I put it back under Mexico. Beyond that, I do not know. Someone thought it worth adding. Pashley (talk) 01:16, 27 May 2023 (UTC)
Where should Inca Empire redirect?
[edit]Hi pashley, I'm trying to understand what made you redirect Inca Empire to Inca Highlands instead of leaving the redirect to Indigenous cultures of South America. Can you enlighten us as to your reasoning? It looks to me like the previous redirect was to a much better article that's more traveler-focused than the new redirect. Regards, Mrkstvns (talk) 14:30, 7 September 2023 (UTC)
Philippines
[edit]Hey, this might be a bit out of left-field, but I was wondering if you might have a place or two to recommend in the Philippines for short-term digital nomading. I'm currently in Vietnam, but I'll have a month free early next year, and I've never been to the Philippines, though for some reason it's a bit intimidating in my head, not sure why (Manila?). I'm essentially just looking for decent internet speed (I write code), walkabilty to amenities, and hopefully some sort of charm. Absolutely zero obligation to answer and/or also happy to email if you'd think it more appropriate. Thanks, Brycehughes (talk) 10:25, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
- Dumaguete would be my first choice. Perhaps Metro Cebu or Bacolod if you prefer a larger city, Moalboal or Bohol if you want diving & backpackers.
- What sort of code do you write? See github for some of mine. Pashley (talk) 14:40, 4 November 2023 (UTC)
- Dumaguete looks... perfect? Thank you! I'm glad I asked. Re code, historically data engineering with Scala. But the JVM is so blasé, so now I write Typescript (which runs on the browser VM... sigh) along with Scala and all the fixings (Postgres, etc.). I haven't written in the C paradigm since high school (I'm not young). Rust looks really cool, I wish I could write that. Brycehughes (talk) 03:39, 5 November 2023 (UTC)
List syntax and newlines
[edit]I note that you often remove the
<!--
-->
construct (such as the one I restored here), probably often added by me where there is an image in the middle of a list. I think you also often prefer having images in lists rather than starting at the top of a section.
The problem here is that the image breaks the list: it makes MediaWiki add a </UL> (end of list) before and <UL> (start of list) after the image. This change of semantics goes mostly unnoticed for users of graphical browsers, but for automated tools, including HTML-to-speech tools, there is a huge difference between one list and two lists.
A better solution would be to tell the browser that the image should be there for layout reasons rather than being connected with a certain bullet, but I don't think MediaWiki provides such a possibility, and I don't know whether HTML and CSS provide for some elegant solution. Until there is a better solution, I think the HTML "comment" is the best way we have: it makes the image and its function apparent in the wikitext and avoids breaking the lists.
(One other thing I tend to do (like in the diff linked above) is to add line breaks to make the images stand out in the code – without changing the layout of the rendered page. It is frustrating to search for a certain passage you find in a diff, or in the rendered page, when the paragraph breaks are invisible in the wikitext, not having the usual blank lines around them.)
–LPfi (talk) 09:41, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for the explanation. I'll leave the null comments alone in future. Pashley (talk) 01:34, 19 March 2024 (UTC)

Deletion of screenshots?
[edit]Why did you delete a bunch of screenshots without providing any rationale? At the very least, please use WV:VFD or give a reason – we're not mind-readers. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 03:48, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
- They are all linked from Special:UnusedFiles & some have dates like 2014. Pashley (talk) 03:50, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
- A file being listed on Special:UnusedFiles is not a valid rationale for speedy deletions per Wikivoyage:Deletion policy#Speedy deletion as the files were not uploaded onto Commons. At the very least, undelete them and move them to Commons or start a WV:VFD thread, but don't unilaterally speedy them. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 03:57, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
- And by no means are all of your speedy deletions out-of-line (you were right to delete the files already on Commons), but it is your responsibility to undelete those inappropriately deleted and ideally transfer them onto Commons, placing c:Template:Wikimedia-screenshot. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 04:05, 18 April 2024 (UTC)
