Archived pages[edit]

I have archived my Wikitravel user talk page here at User talk:Pashley/Archive.

My suggested rewrite of the sex tourism policy has also been copied here, User talk:Pashley/STP.

Hi! I changed a sentence in your policy concerning child prostitution. In most European countries any thing that "support" it is a criminal offence. I would strongly auggest to stay on the legal side and make very clear that any information concerning such activities are being deleted immediately. I think prefer is way to weak and police patrols such things in Europe today very sharp. Hope you are fine with it. Jc8136 (talk) 10:51, 25 September 2012 (CEST)
Your wording is definitely an improvement thanks. Pashley (talk) 02:20, 26 September 2012 (CEST)

Thanks for your comments about E11[edit]

Thanks for your kind words about the E11 article. Currently I am not aware of any good example in WikiVoyage of an itinerary, so any help to improve this one is welcome. I feel pretty much like pioneering. DrMennoWolters (talk) 16:21, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

What I meant is one or two articles that can serve as example. Wikipedia:WikiProject Hiking trails - excuse me for this inline link to WP - qualifies one article in WP as "featured" and six as "good", but that is of course for the encyclopedic type of article. Which of the many itineraries in WikiVoyage, dealing with a long-distance trail, could serve as an example? Let us move this discussion to a more general platform, like the Discussion page of E11 hiking trail or the Travellers' pub or maybe a Talk page linked to the Wikivoyage:Itineraries project or one of the related articles. Sandbox[edit]

I copied the list of pages with empty IsPartOf tags from Wikivoyage_talk:Breadcrumb_navigation#Navigating_down_a_breadcrumb_trail and fixed most of them, ignoring any with a merge tag (already there or added by me) or which were redirects. They are all done except those below.

Ones with no obvious fix: Neusiedl Lake Curonian Spit Tamphel

Thanks for your welcome. How can I translate the coord template (e.g. from the Wikipedia sandy hook article) to the Wikivoyage sandy hook article. The template I want to translate is:

Retiring Abroad question[edit]

This is my first attempt at this, so please forgive any gaffes. I thought I might add something to the Retiring Abroad article about my experience retiring in the US and moving to Poland. I thought I'd start simple with the visa question then realized that my story doesn't seem to slot into any of the defined categories. I was told by the Polish Consulate in LA that they couldn't give me a long-term visa, and as a US citizen I had no need of a short-term visa. I had 90 days allowed in country without a visa (an extension of the Schengen Agreement) and I had to apply at the provincial government office in whatever area I decided to settle for a long-term visa of any type. My wife is a Polish native and so the process I had to go through might be different from other retirees, but I'd be willing to do some research on the matter if I could figure out where to put the results. Thanks for your time --Jimmu

External links discussion[edit]

My revert: http://en.wikivoyage.org/w/index.php?title=Greek_Islands&diff=next&oldid=2116531

Anon comment:

OK thanks. The external links policy means you can't make use of the resource which is a shame, but no way around that. I had persuaded CMS (55 years plus experience of the islands) to release it as non-copyrighted data and was hoping to persuade him to contribute now he is retired. If you change policy please go ahead and undo. Over and out.

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park[edit]

Just in case you thought I made it up: [1] -- Alice 13:27, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

No. I just think such detail belongs on the Puerto or maybe Philippines page, not Asia. At most, a link from Asia. Pashley (talk) 13:39, 1 February 2013 (UTC)
I'd agree that it might be a stretch at the Asia continental level but thanks for raising it at Talk:Southeast_Asia#Water_sports.3F. As you'll see from what I wrote there, it is such an extraordinary natural wonder that I think we should still keep a place for it at this sub-continental level of Southeast_Asia. Let's hope that some more folks comment there since it is difficult to reach a consensus when only two people hold such diametrically opposed views. -- Alice 02:02, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

Investor visa in Brazil[edit]

Hi there. Sorry it took a little longer to get around to this. I haven't found exactly what I was looking for, but Brazil does have an investor visa if the applicant invests at least US$50,000, though information on it in English is scattered. The consulate in Ireland has some information [2], and the consulate in San Francisco has a list of requirements [3]. That's all I´ve got so far... Texugo (talk) 19:39, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Shanghai/Yangpu District[edit]

Thanks for welcoming me. And thanks for pointing out the inner suburbs issue. I have read the discussion and will participate in future Shanghai discussion if I have any ideas. Was an infrequent contributor to Wikitravel some years ago, mainly in Shanghai articles, I see a lot has changed/improved since then. Going to primarily work on Yangpu District and Hongkou District first as I am most familiar with those (lived in Yangpu District for many years, although I must admit its not really a hotspot for tourists). Yep! I just checked Northern lights where a nice featured travel topic effect is visible. Thanks a lot, nice tool! --Danapit (talk) 18:47, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
Yes, Childs also got a boost when it was featured. One caveat, though: The tool is designed for Wikipedia, not Wikivoyage, and if you change any of the settings in the input boxes (language, date range, or article), it will default to Wikipedia. You have to play games with the URL to get Wikivoyage statistics to show up. LtPowers (talk) 18:57, 24 September 2013 (UTC)

Acheng[edit]

Hi Pashley, in an effort to delete and recreate almost-empty articles (to lose the WT link), I was looking to recreate Acheng. I'm not familiar with the Chinese administrative structures, however, and I'm a bit at a loss. If I understand correctly (just from the WP article), it's a sort of administrative district of Harbin. You created the article, however, and did call it a city. Indeed, WP also mentions a city of Acheng. Are these two different entities, or does the city serve as a district? I'll recreate it just the way you did for now, but would be interested to get a better understanding. Thanks! JuliasTravels (talk) 18:14, 4 October 2013 (UTC)

Okay, I think it actually was a city of its own, but was merged with Harbin a number of years ago. That leaves the question if we should treat it as a destination of its own, or as a district of Harbin :-) Thanks! JuliasTravels (talk) 18:34, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
China has an odd system, see List_of_Chinese_provinces_and_regions#Lower-level_divisions. For example, see Fuzhou#Districts; the prefecture includes both urban districts and rural counties. There is no separate city government; the administrative structure is all at prefecture or district & county level. Some counties are centered on towns of half a million or so; those have no separate town gov't, just a county gov't. If a Chinese says he is from "Fuzhou", it can mean anywhere in the prefecture, not just the actual city. If he says "Changle", it can mean anywhere in the county, not just the actual town.
I suspect the Acheng/Harbin relation is something like that, but am not actually certain. I don't know that part of the country. Pashley (talk) 21:50, 4 October 2013 (UTC)
Alright. That would suggest that its an administrative merge, not so much a physical agglomeration of the towns, and from a travellers point of view this place would probably have to be seen as a destination of its own (considering also the size). I'll leave it like this then, and hope someone with more knowledge of the exact local situation will come by some day :-) Thanks for the reply. JuliasTravels (talk) 08:00, 5 October 2013 (UTC)

Wikivoyage:No real world threats‎[edit]

Hi, I wrote a response to your revert at Wikivoyage talk:No real world threats‎ but I don't know if you've seen it yet. Would I be allowed to create a subsection of the policy page and soft redirect it to meta:Threats of harm? Or should I use a separate page and point the subsection there? I'm thinking others might search for certain terms like Wikivoyage:Suicide and Wikivoyage:Threats of suicide.

The rationale I gave was basically that different procedures exist for dealing with threats of suicide vs dealing with threats of litigation. For example, blocking is never the correct procedure when someone is threatening suicide, but always applied in cases of legal threats. TeleComNasSprVen (talk) 04:12, 26 March 2014 (UTC)

Attribution issues at WT[edit]

If it's the image of the pyramid it seems it came from Wikimedia Commons, ( and is attributed to the Commons uploader on it's file description page at The Other Travel wiki). However, some digging on Commons, brought up a prominent warning about the lack of Freedom of Panorama in the origin country, concerning the original photo the banner was cropped from. This may also be a concern worth raising if you fell strongly enough.ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 11:26, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

Support request with team editing experiment project[edit]

Dear tech ambassadors, instead of spamming the Village Pump of each Wikipedia about my tiny project proposal for researching team editing (see here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Research_team_editing), I have decided to leave to your own discretion if the matter is relevant enough to inform a wider audience already. I would appreciate if you could appraise if the Wikipedia community you are more familiar with could have interest in testing group editing "on their own grounds" and with their own guidance. In a nutshell: it consists in editing pages as a group instead of as an individual. This social experiment might involve redefining some aspects of the workflow we are all used to, with the hope of creating a more friendly and collaborative environment since editing under a group umbrella creates less social exposure than traditional "individual editing". I send you this message also as a proof that the Inspire Campaign is already gearing up. As said I would appreciate of *you* just a comment on the talk page/endorsement of my project noting your general perception about the idea. Nothing else. Your contribution helps to shape the future! (which I hope it will be very bright, with colors, and Wikipedia everywhere) Regards from User:Micru on meta.

Wolves[edit]

I note you added the section on wolves into Dangerous animals. I am uneasy about the sentence that wolves are extremely dangerous if provoked. My understanding is that you generally should behave aggressively if a wolf is approaching you, which could be though of as provoking it and our advice thus lead to people not defending themselves. Is there a real risk that a wolf would choose to fight out of pride?

The issue is probably best discussed at the talk page.

I've improved the EN wikipedia a bit, but have been finding that the problem of spurious maps cannot be combatted in Commons, where nothing can be deleted if it is in use on other projects (see here if you are interested in the bureaucratic problem). Consequently, maps in Commons cannot be trusted. Sorry, I didn't mean to edit war with you. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 13:14, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

Citations are not used in article namespace but can be used on talk pages when needed. Pashley (talk) 13:19, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

Philippine English[edit]

I created a guide for English for Philippines-related destinations articles, which provides a guide on English spelling, and differences in vocabulary (including British words in Philippine English, terms only used in Philippine English, or English words that has a different meaning in Philippine English)

Here is a list of some English vocabulary that are only used in the Philippines, or have a different meaning in Philippine English.

  • carnap - to steal a car
  • center island - raised median divider (usually with trees and plants)
  • city/town proper - downtown; city/town/municipal center; poblacion area (usually found in road signs)
  • computer shop - internet café
  • diversion road - bypass road (though the two terms are often interchanged)
  • ecobag - cloth bag
  • estafa - swindling (usually a legal term)
  • footbridge - pedestrian overpass (can also mean any pedestrian bridge)
  • gutter - curb
  • hand-carry - carry-on baggage
  • maniac - sexually perverted person
  • motel - low cost hotels, known for hourly rates and notorious for being a haven for illicit sex (similar to the Japanese "love hotels")
  • pension house - family-owned guest house
  • post - utility pole (from Spanish poste "pole", also borrowed into Philippine languages)
  • presidentiable - candidate for president
  • rotunda - roundabout (from Spanish rotunda, also borrowed into Philippine languages)
  • rubber shoes - sneakers
  • salvage - summary execution (though the more universal term "extrajudicial killing/EJK" slowly replaces it from 2016, after the start of Rodrigo Duterte's anti-drug campaign)
  • side mirror - side-view mirrors
  • vetsin - generic trademark for monosodium glutamate
  • village - residential subdivision

If you can specify other words that have a different meaning or unique to Philippine English, you may help. And in my opinion, a separate article about Philippine English (as a Talk sub-topic) may be possible to handle all of those cases. TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 10:10, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

As a foreigner in the country, I think the only new words I've learned are jeepney & barangay, plus some new usage like comfort room & the Filipino use of "load". I'd say pretty much all a visitor really needs is already in the infobox at Philippines#Talk; in fact I want to shorten that. On the other hand, if you want to do this, why not? Pashley (talk) 01:42, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

That can be possible on a separate article, as what you pointed, you want the "Talk" section to be short. When I will create the "Philippine English" article, that can be linked to it as one of the "see also" articles along with the Filipino phrasebook. My purpose for that is to further explain the English used in the Philippines, like the differences in vocabulary (like those I shown on this thread), and also grammatical differences, peculiar pronunciations (like the Visayans pronouncing written short "e" as a short "i"), and usage in speech (usually code-switching, like Taglish) TagaSanPedroAko (talk) 02:58, 6 July 2017 (UTC)

"Cities" sections[edit]

hi Pashley thank you for your advice on iran i omited one city that is less important than other and one important city. i think it is better we have some advantage to select city, like unesco world heritage sites or some thing like this. in that list we have some city that are not important to international travel who come to Wikivoyage to have good travel like qom and we don,t have some city like kerman that have 5 sites in unesco list. if you are agree i change that list. thank you Sadegh sadegh (talk) 05:13, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

If I may, Sadegh sadegh: As I already said on my user talk page, you must post your argument to Talk:Iran and wait for some time (probably several days, at least) until a consensus either develops or does not develop in favor of your proposal. It is quite insufficient for you to convince one or two people individually on their user talk pages. Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:29, 25 October 2017 (UTC)

Just a heads up[edit]

Regarding this, please see this user's contribution history and specifically this diff. This is a spammer that ThunderingTyphoons and I have been dealing with lately, albeit with a far more sophisticated MO than the bots we're used to. The contributions they make look valuable at first blush, but the external links they incorporate into them lead to spam sites. -- AndreCarrotflower (talk) 16:37, 29 October 2017 (UTC)

Thank you[edit]

Thanks, Pashley, for unleashing your awesome powers of destruction on those sandbox pages of mine. Cheerio, ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 10:06, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
